What math is usually required for econ phD. I read that steven levitt in undergrad only had one course in math, being calculus, but since he graduated from Harvard summa cum laude and was credited for having the best undergrad thesis in economics, it is safe to say that he was competitive in other aspects. Do most students go to phD programs in economics as a math or some sort of math/econ joint major? What is the math background for a typical student going into a top econ phD program? Was Levitt's situation very uncommon?

I am thinking of doing a math/econ joint major instead of plain econ. Is that overkill especially if I don't like math classes all that much compared to economics.
