Hi,
I’m a US citizen living in India. I graduated from high school, did entire schooling in India from a State board, and am on a gap year. My query is that I don’t have 3 years of Math as required by the US universities and instead, I have only 2 years. The reason behind this is that my counselor suggested me to do so since I was planning to study medicine in India but things didn’t turn out well and hence the gap year. Now I’m planning to move back to the US and study there and get into medical school after doing undergraduate studies but the academic requirement is an obstacle to me. My converted GPA from WES is 3.73. I’m going to give SAT in December and AP this summer. Any idea on what should I do and is there any University where I can get in with just 2 units of math? Or is there any other way out?
Any chance those two units of math are Calculus I and II?
If not, I’d suggest you take a community college math course ASAP, and another over the summer, and explain that on your applications. Colleges expect at LEAST 3 years of math to include Algebra 2 and Geometry.
Good luck!
No, I don’t have a calculus course. In India, it’s integrated math so according to that, I have algebra 1, Geometry, and algebra 2(maybe short of two topics to be called algebra 2?). Can I fulfill the requirement through SAT or AP exam?
Btw Thanks for the reply!
Can you take it in a community college or alike during the gap year?
Yes if there’s no other way, I will take it in a community college. Will I still be a freshmen student or transfer?
Algebra - Geometry - Algebra 2 is going to be the bare minimum for college admissions. But if you’re not shooting for a highly competitive school, you should be okay; but I’d take a spring community college course in math to be safe. Or maybe you can take an online math course, in maybe Trig/PreCalc, right now?
If I were you, I’d call a few college admissions offices and see what they say. Look at Ursinus College. They have a great reputation, are not looking for top stats, and have a terrific Pre-Med advisory program. They do require 3 years of math but if you pick one up this spring that might work! Good luck.
One other thought…have a look at Long Island University/Post. They do have an acceptance program for students who fall short of regular admissions requirements: http://liu.edu/CWPost/Admissions/Freshmen/LIU-Promise
Well, I was thinking about the GED test. Is it okay to take the test since I have Non-US high school credentials? Will my math requirement be fulfilled through GED?
Anyway, I will look into the colleges you mentioned. Long Island University seems great!
Thanks!
