Hi all,
I posted a couple of threads seeking help for my college choices.

I am set on Rutgers but I need reassurance! I already paid my deposit before the May 1 deadline but I just want to be sure before it's too late. There are still spaces in Stony Brook and Suffolk but I am still thinking about it.

So as you may know I want to major in Journalism and may add a second major in Marketing or Finance (still not sure).

What made me reconsider Suffolk and stony brook is because my friends are are attending (my very close friends). So I need ur help! Do you think rutgers is the best choice for me? Considering location near NYC AND PHILLY.

Btw I am an international student if that matters.

The prices for each school:

Rutgers: $28k
Suffolk (got a scholarship and honors program) so it would cost $15k

Stony brook would cost around $19k

I could afford Rutgers and the price is within my budget so it's perfect and I won't be in debt. However, which do you think would be the best for me if I work super super hard and try my best! ? Also if I ever have the chance to work in the states I would definitely want to work in NYC or LA (maybe even Chicago) but not Boston though. Would Suffolk take me far outside New England. (Since I am an international I def care about the colleges rep nationally!)

Thanks!! I appreciate your help!

Will post this on the Rutgers, Suffolk and Stony Brook forum as I want all ur opinions! Thanks again!

Go to Rutgers. If you were a New Yorker, I would tell you to go to Stony Brook. Assuming New Brunswick, Rutgers is better socially and academically. Since you can afford it, why not?

Suffolk is a school in right in Boston on Beacon Hill. It is attended by students who are generally lower achieving than those at Rutgers or Stony Brook.

You can’t go wrong with Rutgers or Stony Brook. I would go with Rutgers, so you are not following friends, you will be making new friends quickly.

Hope you decided on Rutgers. No SUNY can compare with Rutgers. Rutgers is the flagship university for New Jersey. There is no flagship for SUNY. There are about 63 SUNY campuses. Money is stretched too thin for any to compete with the flagships of most other states. The ratings reflect that fact. SUNYs are hopelessly behind the times. Walk around Rutgers and see the facilities. Then work around Stony Brook. Which do you prefer? Check out the departments you are interested in. Which seems more current? I also happen to like the Rutgers campus far more than I like Stony Brook.

You should really consider doing some research before you make demonstrably incorrect assertions. SBU is actually a quite good school ---- specifically in the STEM disciplines, which, granted, may not apply to the OP who’s doing journalism. Seriously though, go look at the STEM rankings between Rutgers and SBU; SBU actually ranks as well or better than Rutgers in many of the STEM fields (e.g. Bio, Earth Science, Math, Physics, CS). When you make demonstrably false and overly vague statements like “X is a crappy school”, you can really be planting the seeds of misinformation that may lead to someone making a bad choice. To provide useful feedback, it should really be based on facts.

This decision has been made but for the sake of the record, thed00d, Rutgers is a stronger school than Stony Brook. Stony Brook is better than most SUNYs for science. The OP is interested in journalism. Stony Brook is rated by USnews overall as 88; in English as 63 and a 38 as “top public”; Rutgers is rated overall as 70; in English as 17 and as a 26 for Top Public school. Rutgers got higher ratings on all the relevant dimensions. I am not saying that Stony Brook is a crappy school. I am saying that Rutgers is a better school in the areas that are relevant tot he original poster.

Hey lostaccount. I totally agree that “Rutgers got higher ratings on all the relevant dimensions.” I’m just trying to avoid blanket statements like “No SUNY can compare with Rutgers”, because the answer to which school is “better” depends on the field of study one’s considering. I agree (not that your objective statistics require my agreement) that Rutgers is better in the areas relevant to the OP, and also that Rutgers is a great school overall. However, I’d reject the un-qualified declaration that one or the other of the schools is just “better”. When we’re talking about something as broad as a University, the field matters a lot (for example, if you’re going to study my field, CS, I would say that e.g. UIUC is better than Harvard, though I wouldn’t necessarily claim that UIUC is a better university). Anyway, thanks for the well-reasoned and constructive comment :).
