You have no way of knowing that. Not all high schools are the same and colleges know that. We also don’t know the distribution of GPA. If freshman year was weak most schools don’t count freshman year or discount it. His chances for acceptance at both of those schools well exceed 50%. They both get lots of applications because of location and even with relatively high acceptance rates the effective acceptance rates are much higher.
What is an “effective acceptance rate”?
^ I agree. 3.4 w. will hurt this student. Babson is out of reach too, unless the student has a hook.
My kid just went though applying to B-schools and they looking for higher and higher GPAs.
Farmer at Miami (Ohio) perhaps?
OP, my advice is to apply EA or rolling and see how your app is perceived. For example U of Minnesota Carlson school of management is a great Bschool with rolling admissions. You would know well before December if you are in or not. Miami University has EA. That way you can gauge how your gpa is perceived and use RD to add more reaches or go for more matches/safeties.
For Midwest schools, University of Iowa and Ohio State University are some good picks. Also University of Cincinnati, they have a great co-op program that is appealing for the business majors
@TomSrOfBoston Candidates that are reasonably qualified. Both of these schools get applications well below this student just because they are popular and in sexy locations. I would bet this kid gets in both. On my younger son’s naviance 75% of the students with above a 3.0 and 27 ACT were accepted.
definitely consider TCNJ. Its is a top ranked small liberal arts school with a TOP #35 in the country Business undergrad program. One of a few schools that concentrates on undergrads. they are also the # 20 accounting program in the nation. Very well recruited . The school itself is ranked #3 overall for the region as per USNEWS and that’s vs privates as well. It seems to be on a steady climb for the past 15 years. Also they just added over $200 million in new facilities (new stem building to open next year).
However, finance major is one of the more competitive and your scores are borderline. BTW Barrons also ranked TCNJ one of the 75 most competitive in the nation. Look into it and I suggest a visit. Good luck
For midwest options, I second Butler. You might also look at U Dayton, Xavier, and Ohio U. These Ohio schools are matches or safeties and merit is a strong possibility at all three. Don’t know specifically about the strength of the Finance departments, though.
^^ranked #35 undergrad b-school in the nation? yeah…by Bloomberg which is ceasing their horribly biased rankings system after this year.
ok whatever, but its ranked #35 and has many other accolades as well. Everyone should do their own research and
choose what feels like the right fit. The op asked for recommendations and TCNJ is one of the best and might be the right fit – a reach school given the stats but none the less serious consideration should be given , LBad’s personal bias aside.
I would advise you to give serious consideration to UNCW and Appalachian State, both of which have excellent and highly underrated B-schools in their own right
@stones3 gave some helpful info about TCNJ. TCNJ is pretty good for business.
You should also consider Indiana University Bloomington
i agree 100% with Indiana
Are you a NY resident that goes to boarding school in CT? That may make you a resident of both states.
