Undergraduate Business With Low-ish Math Grades & ACT Score

Hi! I have been interested in business for as long as I can remember and currently run my own small business with over 100 clients and 10 employees (part-time) and 12 contractors. Our revenue for last summer year was over $20,000 and thats just with part time work. I have also interned at multiple companies including a global ad agency. My particular interest is in marketing and communications and I have done freelance work in that industry as well as attended a rigorous summer program about marketing at Yale (plus multiple other business intensive summer programs - including one at Harvard Business School).

The problem I struggle in math - something most business focused schools are clearly going to look closely at. Math has never held be back in running my own company but in school I have received mostly B’s (with a couple A’s and one C) in my math courses. I am currently in pre-calc and ended the semester with a B. I also scored very low on the ACT math section - a 19 - although my composite score was 29. My low math grades can be partly attributed to multiple learning differences I have that directly affect my math skills. Otherwise academically I have mostly A’s and am quite involved at my school.

I applied to many business focused schools and did a few early action. So far I have been deferred from almost all and the reason seems to be math across the board. I am not interested in studying finance or accounting at all but math still seems to be a concern for these schools. I am wondering what I can do to try and show to the schools math will not be a problem for me and I am ready for it at a college level. Thanks for any help and advise!

Although it may be a little too late now, I would suggest that you mention your learning differences somewhere in your essays/ extra information section in the CommonApp. Most colleges should understand. Alternatively, what you could have done is applied for the college of Arts and Sciences to a university where you want to go to study business. After a semester of hard work and a high GPA (ideally > 3.5), you may be able to transfer into the business school. If not, try to transfer into another college. You are right when you mentioned that business schools tend to focus on math in high school and on SAT/ ACT scores, but as long as your application is secured with a good GPA and great essays, you will have a shot
