Undergraduate Courses

i was somewhat put off of Cornell when i learned that you must apply to ONE of the seven undergraduate colleges (since i have no idea what i want to study as my major).

so i ask:

-is it possible to SWITCH between different Cornell colleges?

and

-i know that the first two years of college are liberal arts, so you learn a vast range of things, just like in high school. so does each student at Cornell learn the same things? or does it still depend on which college that student is in?

It is possible to do internal transfers.

Each college and major has its own curriculum. CAS is basically a liberal arts college; they have a core curriculum and you can experiment for a year or two before deciding on a major.

are internal transfers easy and fast processes? how can you transfer?

CAS is liberal arts; are the other colleges also liberal arts?

I’m not really sure about internal transfers, but there’s some kind of application and it takes a while.

The other colleges are more career-oriented, but you may still be able to take certain courses in CAS.
Engineering is obviously oriented towards practical uses of math and science, not liberal arts.
CALS is oriented towards science and biology, but also has some other things.
ILR for economics, law maybe
Hotel for hospitality and economics? I think
AAP for exactly what its name says
HumEc for human biology, technology and society

So no, not all colleges are liberal arts, since they don’t necessary provide an education for everything.

thanks for the help!

another question

i have noticed that the acceptance rate to the college of arts and sciences is pretty low compared to the other six colleges within Cornell. the thing is, i am pretty sure i want to go for CAS because i am not sure what i want to do yet and CAS is the most liberal, right? the other thing is i would love to GO to Cornell! so should i just apply to CAS or should i apply to another college that is EASIER (higher acceptance rate) to get into and then transfer?

Since you aren’t leaning towards any particular major, it wouldn’t do you any good to apply to a different college, since they will see a lack of interest and reject you.
