Undergraduate degree

So basically ive been living outside the country and am oos for all states. Ive gotten to all the uc’s except berkeley which hasnt replied yet, and university of washington seattle campus. I used to live in portland so i also applied to portland state univeristy where i got into their honors with a full ride, and i dont have to pay for housing. I want to study medecine at stanford or uw but im scared getting my B.S in psu might affect my chances of getting in, also going 200k in debt seems very unreasonable. Ive read that i could do residency for tuition purposes but its quite a risk. I’m really stuck on what to do especially since i havent been in the country for a bit. Anyone have any personal experiences or advice…? Anything would be much appreciated…

This is unlikely. In some states there may be some special loophole if that is the state your parent(s) lived in before they moved internationally, or if they’re military and have a Home of Record. You’d have to look that up - here for California. It doesn’t actually look like there’s an exception that would apply to you living outside of the U.S., but I simply skimmed quickly. Here is the relevant page for UW; if your parent was a WA resident and then stationed abroad for military or civil service, you may qualify.

But if your parents are not from CA or WA, then you won’t get residency for tuition purposes.

First of all, it’s far too early to focus on any specific medical school. Secondly, no pre-med student should get fixated on one or two medical schools - every med school in the U.S. is good, very competitive, and will get you to your goal of being a doctor.

But thirdly, no, going to Portland State won’t affect your chances of getting into Stanford or UW. You can go there with a PSU degree.

You can’t borrow $200K anyway. You, assuming you are a U.S. citizen or permanent resident, can only borrow $5,500 your first year - maybe a bit more if your parents are rejected for a Parent PLUS loan.

Your parents or some other creditworthy adult would have to cosign for you to borrow private loans above that amount. And they absolutely shouldn’t - $200K is far too much money to borrow for undergrad.

Go to Portland State!

Thank you so much for that information. You don’t know how helpful it was for me! The reason I know that I want to go to UW or stanford is mostly based on the fact that i don’t want to leave the west. But ofcourse I want to keep my options open. However I’ve read on many college forums that the college i get my B.S highly affects where I can get my acceptance while others say that its better to shine in a normal college than go to a really good one in my case UCSD or UCB. But than again PSU has no ranking and I’ve been stuck on what to do since the results came out. Being out of the country isn’t helping with anything either. Thank you again, loads.
