I'm curious about the undergraduate research at Georgia Tech, it says on the website that it is available but does not specify who is allowed to. Are freshmen allowed to do research or is it only upperclassmen?

Anyone can participate in research - it’s up to the professor managing the study. Some faculty prefer juniors and seniors because they have enough coursework in the major to understand the basic concepts under investigation, but it’s not uncommon for freshman to be hired into labs to assist with basic work (taking measurements, performing repetitive tasks, etc), especially because right now there is more research available at GT than there are students interested in researching.

When you get to campus, keep an eye out for flyers advertising research opportunities and ask your professors if they know of anyone hiring.

“because right now there is more research available at GT than there are students interested in researching.”

How do you know this?

Go to campus and look at all of the flyers for undergraduate research assistants that are everywhere.

It’s obviously going to be department dependent (it’s going to be easier to find research in Mechanical Engineering than in Public Policy) but the point still stands that there are more positions than people interested. That’s what happens when you go to the 2nd highest funded research university in the country.
