Overrated: don’t care
Underrated: Between the Buried and Me, Orbs, Arghoslent

underrated: dr. seuss
overrated: thomas kinkade (sure everyone knows this though), ELSWORTH KELLY, deidara

Underrated: me

How many hipsters does it take to screw in a lightbulb?

It’s a really obscure number, you probably haven’t heard of it…

Hahaha. Although I love him and he’s got major swag, Lil Wayne is lyrically a bit overrated.

I guess someone will have to revoke his hood pass, then. :p

I would definitely lump Lil Wayne in with the other overrated folk (although I like his teardrop tattoos–sensitive soul, that one…)

I recant my statement about Soulja Boy’s lyrical prowess. After listening to such gems as ‘Doo Doo Head,’ ‘Girl U Stank (Take A Bath),’ and ‘Booty Meat,’ I will have to nominate him as the best rapper–no, artist–who has ever walked this earth.

/thread

Okay my scales are probably a bit ‘off’ but I’ll try to explain my reasoning
Overrated:
Arcade Fire - most people haven’t even heard of them, but it seems like everyone I’ve talked to who knows them, loves them. IMO, they’re good, but not THAT good.
Coldplay - I LOVEEE Coldplay. I’m a longtime fan. But I don’t like Viva La Vida. Their older stuff (X & Y, Parachutes) is underrated.
Muse - I love them, they’re great, and Bellamy is a helluva singer. But I liked Absolution the best, by far.
Oasis - Wonderwall and Champagne Supernova are NOT their best songs.
The xx - overhyped indie.

Underrated
Arctic Monkeys - my favorite band, and they usually aren’t even recognized in the US, unfortunately.
The National - amazing band as well, their new album (Bloodbuzz Ohio) is definitely on my top 10 all time list.
Oasis - wonderwall and champagne supernova are overrated… all of their other songs are not, generally. They don’t get enough credit, at least not in the US.

I think the overrated artists and bands are quite obvious…

Underrated

-Five for Fighting; yes, I realize that most people have heard their hit radio songs but they have so many amazing less popular songs too

-Vertical Horizon; a wide collection of inde/pop/rock songs, some are commonly heard on the radio but the band itself is not that well known

-Many of the rock and pop artists/bands from many years ago…people forget about them but their music is still soooooo good and sets up the precedent for music today. It’s important to remember them…

-Am sure there are others but I can’t think of any more right now lol.

overrated: every band i’ve never heard of

underrated: not being ironic

Underrated: Flying Lotus (check out his Brainfeeder label…), The Gaslamp Killer, The Glitch Mob, edIT, Boreta, Kraddy, Ooah, Mimosa, NastyNasty, El-P, Lorn, Computer Jay, Nosaj Thing, Daedelus, Samiyam, Lokid, Hudson Mohawke, Mr. Oizo, Aeed, Take, Hecq, NiT GriT, Portformat, Blue Stahli, Ratatat and lots of other electronic/experimental groups, especially in LA/SF; so much talent that most people don’t care to listen to

Other amazing artists like Rufus Wainwright and Regina Spektor are pretty underappreciated too.

See them live and I guarantee your opinion will change. Funeral is also probably my favorite album from the 2000s.

Overrated: AC/DC, Journey, Lady Gaga, Katy Perry, Kings of Leon
Underrated: Fleet Foxes, Frightened Rabbit, Jefferson Airplane, The Lovin’ Spoonful, The Smiths, R.E.M, Tom Waits

Whoa, for a second there Pyroza I thought you placed Fleet Foxes under “overrated”. Phew! Glad to know that my eyes were deceiving me.

Only if you actually consider Ellsworth Kelly and artist

hahaha I’ve been saying this forever. About 99% of the US population needs to listen to “Cast No Shadow”, “Stand by Me”, and “Live Forever” before the decide that the only Oasis song they will ever listen to will be “Wonderwall”. That goes for The Verve too. They actually do have songs better than “Bittersweet Symphony”

Idlewild, Slowdive, Chapterhouse, Swervedriver, and Seafood are also pretty good

too bad Liam Gallagher is still a giant ******bag

He is a dick, that cannot be denied

I mentioned them on the first page but they deserve a second round of applause - cKy and Clutch are both very underrated.

DC:

I saw Anti Flag about 2 weeks ago, great live performances. They are from my hometown, which is pretty cool. My friends brother plays hockey with the bassist. Cool guy.

Overrated:

Vampire Weekend
LL Cool J (nominated for the Rock Hall)
Bon Jovi (nominated)
J Geils Band (nominated)
The Beach Boys (Pet Sounds was solid)
Bob Dylan (I know I will get some heat for that, he was a great songwriter, but that’s about it. Plus, some people are obsessed about him)
Queen
■■■■■
Too many indie bands to list
Drake
Ke$ha (great dance music though)
The Fray/One Republic
Elvis
Mike Posner
Britney Spears

I’m sure more than I can think of right now.

Underrated:

Simon and Garfunkel
Most punk bands-Black Flag, Rancid, Social Distortion, Leftover Crack.
Less Than Jake
Mighty Mighty Bosstones
Catch 22/Streetlight Manifesto (ska as a whole)
Amy Winehouse (her crack addiction distracts people form her killer music)
Christina Aguilara (incredible voice)
Socially conscious rap- Immortal Techniques, Raekwon, Wu Tang Clan, Jedi Mind Tricks, etc;
This may sound odd, but The Beatles in relation to prog rock (A lot of people don’t realize how incredible and new Sgt. pepper’s was)
Rush
Sublime (people don’t understand how great of an album “Sublime” is)
The Velvet Underground
John Mellencamp
Lucero
Long Beach Dub-All Stars
Modest Mouse
Operation Ivy
The Strokes
Queens of the Stone Age
Desmond Dekker

Like some say of Oasis, I think Nine Inch Nails is semi-underrated in the sense that a lot of people only know a few of their songs.

The big one I disagree with is Kings of Leon being overrated.

Aha Shake Heartbreak is a fantastic, southern roots rock album. Their early stuff is really solid southern rock. I actually almost put them as underrated. Only by Night is a great rock album. I can see them being overrated because some people are bandwagon fans, and name drop King of Leon to appear knowledgeable about music. They sound great live, as well.

I agree with Coldplay being overrated, as well as Arcade Fire.

Most underrated genre is either punk or ska.

I would like to add Bob Marley and Ekoostic Hookah to the overrated list.

Bands that are undervalued (people don’t realize how talented they are):
Led Zeppelin
Jimi Hendrix
Cream
The Yardbirds
Jeff Beck and Eric Clapton
