Unexpectedly satisfying and high paying careers...<Parents/Mentors>

Follow up from the most marketable major thread. The thread yielded the usual suspects, as such left me wanting... I also realized college students probably aren't the best audience to answer this question since they don't have the real world work experience.

I'd like to get ideas of what jobs may exist out in the market place that make good money and provide a nice quality of life.

So far, one that fit the category is nurse anesthetist.

I suppose some of these careers may not have high demand, people count wise, but have special skills or other needs.

Any ideas are welcome. Even if it's second hand...

The CRNA field is supposed to only be downhill from here. Their days of higher pay than physicians are numbered.

How did you come to that conclusion? Even if the pay is lower than doctors pay, I still suspect there will be enough demand to make good money.

Landscape architecture? Tough field during recessions, but it’s better paying than architecture and (arguably) provides more benefit to society.

Engineering with a focus in renewable energy? I’d guess mechanical or electrical would be your best bet.

Pole dancing

I didn’t come to that conclusion independently :). I extensively read up on it in various threads at the SDN forums, which had several links to articles about it as well. It really isn’t fair to physicians anyway, and when everyone realized CRNAs were making so much money, there was a huge increase in people aspiring to be them. From the last I heard, there was debate about whether nursing schools would be smart and severely restrict the number of CRNAs they put into the work force, because the flood would drop demand and lower pay. Anesthesiologists were in a panic, too, because their field was being taken over, so there was a bit of a war going on between them and CRNAs. I was warned by several physicians not to go into the field due to uncertainty about their futures. That whole situation is just a mess…

Another interesting job I came across is a Optometrist working as a PA for an Opthamologist doing Lasik surgery. Friend of mine is making good money, but I don’t know how long the whole Lasik money train will run.
