Unfair Admission? Summer B 2012

Everyone thinks I was accepted with the worst credentials of all applicants. All my friends think it wasn't fair for me to be have gotten admission. Some of whom had 2000+ SAT scores or 4.0 GPA and were still rejected.

My credentials are:

GPA: 3.5 UW / 3.55 UF approx
Overall coursework: 2 AP, the rest regular/honors
SAT: 1520 (490 M, 530 CR, 500 W)
ACT: 21 Composite

No EC's. (I did key club but you only do community service)
No legacy.

I was accepted to UCF and USF, rejected by FSU.

What I really hate though is a lot of my friends who were rejected say my acceptance to UF is really unfair and that I don't deserve to go there. They also think I lied on my application which I hadn't at all. In fact, I didn't even think I'd get in. My parents just say that since I was accepted, then I must've done something worthy for UF that they haven't. I checked the freshman profile for UF 2011 and I noticed I actually fall way below their mid 50 in everything. I also looked at other applicants on here and noticed everyone had way better stats than me. I don't know what to think now. Is my admission really a mistake?

Based on the numbers, your friends are RIGHT.

Your numbers are not even close to what one would expect would be required, especially if you are not a URM.

There must be some reason you were accepted, but you even admit that your ECs were not good.

And no hooks.

I suggest that you take advantage of what amounts to a “gift” to you, and work your butt off at UF, and prove to yourself that you are truly worthy of this opportunity.

In these tough economic times, admission to UF is a coveted spot, so don’t be too hard on your friends for being envious or bitter. The college admissions process is to some extent a crapshoot, and you just rolled a seven.

That’s pretty crazy. I feel like you got in by putting forth half the work that most admits did. I’d feel amazing if I were you and I would show the admission committee that it wasn’t a mistake.

Must have been your essay. They probably saw something in you.

You know what? Be happy. Ignore what your friends say, and listen to your parents. You got in, and they didn’t. The only reason they have for criticizing you is jealousy. If it was a mistake, so what? They can never prove it. Something about you was good enough to get in. So, and if I’m the only one, congratulations! I hope to see you next year on campus! :)

You must have written an essay that really impressed them. Your friends are right though, but you know what don’t let them think it was a mistake. Work hard, do really well and don’t let UF regret their decision. I agree w/ nickirows your friends are jealous and are trying to make you feel bad/guilty…don’t let them do that to you. Go to UF, study hard and move forward. Congrats on the acceptance and best of luck to you at UF!

I…hate…you…so…much…

From experience I can tell you that admissions is sometimes pretty random but NOT stupid nor nonsense. If we admitted you then you should be celebrating and not listening to those that you call “friends”. Instead of criticizing your stats they should be happy for you. Anyways, I wish you the best and enjoy your remaining time in high school.
PS Remember to do well in your senior classes.

My friends are just going through a phase. I think it’s just devastating for those who were rejected but I’m sure they’ll move on in a week or so. I just accepted the admission and I’ll make sure UF doesn’t regret their decision. My parents are proud of me though I still kinda feel like I got lucky.

Lr2010 - how is it possible to get admitted to an IVY league school but rejected from UF? Really ? This makes no sense - admitting students “randomly” is a bit insulting.

first of all yes you were not as qualified as others.

BUT UF saw something in your application that they liked. So be thankful and move on.

Oh one more thing, find new friends.

so unfair, i know some people with 2100-2200 SAT rejected. I personally got a 2000 and also rejected, and I had alot of ECs…

IndianGuy honestly sorry that sucks but get over it. There is no reason to gripe about those who did get accepted when you got rejected. Its not productive. If you want to vent dont do it at the expense of others.

Ir 2010:

You say that admission can be somewhat random, but not stupid or nonsense. But from his post, it would seem that the fact that he was admitted to UF was indeed stupid and/or nonsense.

Given his stats, I would say that his friends, and the kids posting on this thread, have a right to be angry. Not at HIM, per se, but at UF.

You can’t expect someone to be “happy for someone” when that someone got into UF with a record that seems inferior to the unhappy person on every quantifiable measure.

I don’t care if he wrote the greatest essay in the history of the universe. Why would that be enough to make up for his utterly mediocre application, and why would that mean that he should deserve admission over someone who has far better stats, AND far better ECs? Why would a good essay or “something” in his application trump four years of hard work by another student?

He himself can point to nothing special about him that would merit admission.

Both he and his peers recognize that he did not deserve admission.

It would seem hard to believe that this applicant could make it past a committee who reviewed his application. And that a majority of the committee would admit him.

I would guess that the TRUE reason he was admitted was that his parents had some sort of connections he may not even know about, and that they pulled strings, and that this is what got him into the school. Just like George Bush got into Yale, and Harvard Business School, with a 1200 SAT.

Unless he found a cure for cancer, I would think that a 1520 SAT, and a 21 ACT, along with only a 3.5 UF gpa, would knock him out of the box right off the bat.

Further, even if UF doesn’t care that it wasn’t fair to the regular middle class kids who were passed over for this mediore applicant, it might also be noted that there is some hard working disadvantaged URM kid out there who might have been more deserving of this coveted admission spot.

This reminds me of when I was a kid, when President Nixon picked a really mediocre candidate for the Supreme Court. Some Senator, in defending the nomination, declared, “well, mediocre people deserve to be represented too”.

Also, I would think that there is a real risk that this kid might not be able to cut it academically at UF. He might get sliced to pieces by his competition.

I suspect that UF will get a lot of applications from students at this particular high school next year, as the word spreads that “John Doe” got into UF with those stats.

@ufwizard Hey, **** em. they’re jealous and you dont have to care about them now or in 7 months when you are starting UF and they are never to be seen again

LOL. just read your stats and profile, you totally dont deserve to get in haha. You should be happy and just feel lucky. like you just won the lottery

it’s a ■■■■■! it’s obvious!

ufwizard one word of advice. From day one you had better get on the studies. Dont think for a second that UF is HS.

It is obvious that you slacked off in HS. And so far you have gotten away with it. But the “Buck Stops Here” “The Party is Over”. UF is very competitive and the students are for the most part the top 3% of their HS.

I wish you all the luck. Then again luck is something that so far you been able to master.

if you’re not going to be nice, don’t waste your time posting.

the same thing happened to my friend. He had a 24 or 25 ACT had no desire to go to UF. He filled out his application LAST minute and didn’t even fill out the extracurricular section or ANYTHING. He only added in an essay which expressed zero-no desire to go to UF. AND he got in. However he had a high GPA and is and international student if that counts for anything.
