Did anyone attend New York Unified Auditions 2018 that could tell me about the experience? I am attending Chicago so trying to get as much info and advice that I can. Did any of the more known schools accept walk up auditions. How was the Dance Call set up this year.
Any info you could share would be helpful. Thank you for your time.
My daughter and I attended. She got walk-ins at Ball State and Viterbo. Point Park may have a had a few spots too, but my daughter was already scheduled there. Penn State did not allow any, neither did Syracuse or Emerson. Not sure about any other schools.
The dance calls were pretty straight forward. They taught the dance then broke them into smaller groups to perform in front of them. At Point Park they called up a few of the better dancers to perform again. At Syracuse, they asked the kids if they had an special skills. One kid juggled.
Hope that helps! Break legs!
My daughter did NYC Unifieds. It was controlled chaos. Lots of people all with one goal in mind. That being said we found everyone to be very nice. Be organized, we had a schedule printed out and knew where we needed to go and tried to get to each audition early. She also had each school broken down into folders, music, head shot with resume so she could just use that. She had her own speaker but most schools had one if you need it. At two schools she signed in early and they took her right away so be ready to go. She did not do any walk ins, her stress level was very high and the business was a bit much for her. Many schools had signs up if they were not accepting walk ins. I know Montclair had a ton of kids asking and they filled their available spots very quickly. I would recommend that if she has a particular school in mind you head there early and ask if they have spots.
For dance calls it was pretty much like MTMOM17 said. My daughter is a dancer and found there was no real warm up so she made sure she did her own in the hall and she did a cool down.
Have water, snacks, lozenges, extra tights and static guard.
Break a leg
Was it a open dance call or did every single individual MT school have own? Was your dance call held at the hotel or a different venue?
Thanks for the information you have given me so far very helpful.
Each school has it’s own dance call usually in the same building where they are doing their auditions.
@Jalyndance - in 2014 (when my D auditioned) some were held in different areas. For example, I think I remember that Michigan’s was held in a nearby professional dance studio - not one of the hotels
^^^so far, most of D’s dance calls are remote - generally at Joffrey Ballet Studios (10 E. Randolph St.).
That’s why I said “usually”. In 2016- all of my D’s 10 dance calls were in the same buildings at Unifieds.
@stagedoormama Things have shifted a bit since D1 auditioned. She auditioned Acting but her movement calls were on site. S did not do Chicago Unifieds so the separate time and place for the dance call is new to us and added another layer of scheduling challenges. Luckily, two of them are on Sunday.
How much $ was the audition fees for walk ups? After auditioning did they do call backs? How was notification of either being accepted or not handled?
Two years ago, we paid 0 audition fees for walk ups. I realize that is unusual. For two of the schools (Texas State I believe and LIU Post), D was asked to come back for an interview. She went back to the room to apply to the schools where she had interest (and we paid the application fees there). 3 of the 4 schools let her know fairly quickly of their decision. She never heard from Texas State for the BFA Acting program despite follow up calls and emails. It was a bit strange.
Arcadia University in Philadelphia offers walk-up auditions in Chicago. It costs nothing to audition and/or apply. You can also sign-up for a time through their website in advance.
I want to say when we did pay audition fees for walk-ins it was somewhere between $30-$45. The schools we did didn’t do callbacks, just the walk-in audition and then they asked D to apply (or not).
My daughter did 2 walk-ins at New York Unifieds. The first was at Viterbo, where she had to pay a $20 fee to audition, and afterwards they told her to apply. The second was at Ball State, where she didn’t have to pay a fee to audition on the spot. Ball State also told her to apply after her audition.
I don’t know if they tell everyone to apply after they do a walk-in audition or not.
Break a leg to all the kids heading off to Unifieds this weekend! I can’t believe it has been a whole year since we were there. Just thinking about it brings on that feeling of excitement and anxiety. Try to relax and enjoy. Remember this is an experience a rare and select group will ever truly understand. On the other side you will look back with many memories, some fond, some not so much. But it will be something you will always remember and say you not only survived, but conquered!
D has Emerson this am. What programs are you/your kids auditioning for today? Break legs to all!
Today are the marathons - Ithaca and Pace - ending with CCPA at the very end of the day.
Break legs!!!
Have FUN everyone!
Just curious: Does CCM MT not attend LA Unifieds this year? I know that CCM Acting does on 2/10, but it appears CCM MT does not based on the school’s site and the application handbook. I know this has not always been the case.
