It is if you are a MT major. They have an Acting BFA that does not require dance

Is the Palmer House the best place to stay?

Yes, Palmer House if you are going to Unifieds in Chicago is defintitely the best place to stay!! We went to both NY and Chicago and Chicago’s Unified experience was soo much better. Loved the venue and the fact most of all schools were in the hotel (unless you were auditioning for schools not in “unifieds” but there at the same time). I would highly recommend the Palmer House!

@thestage603, I wouldn’t consider Emerson light in the Gen Eds…or at least my Gen Ed-averse S didn’t when he looked at the BFA MT curriculum! The ratio of MT credits to Liberal Arts/core credits is 55:45.

Oh, the Palmer House is in Chicago! We are going to New York Unifieds. Any hotel recommendations there? @maMTma, yes Emerson seems to be the exception to his rule. He loved it! We went for a visit in November.

The New Yorker seems to be a favorite. There were some good deals available too.

BU is also not “light in the gen eds.”
Has he looked at Otterbein? Acting majors can take voice lessons (and it’s part of their curriculum 2nd semester of freshman year, at least); they also get a year of introductory dance and can continue if they want. One non-theater class per semester, and no math/lab science/foreign language requirements for BFA performance majors.

thestage603 - Check out the BM MT at the University of Southern Maine. The gen ed. curriculum is one math, one science, one English, and a few others sprinkled in, but light. No foreign language requirement. The “dance” part of the audition was not rigorous, but more about movement. This is my son’s one academic and artistic acceptance so far. He also was accepted at URI for the BFA Acting, Voice Minor. We haven’t visited, as he is waiting on the outcome from the six schools he has yet to hear from.

Regarding Unifieds, son went to both the NYC and Chicago Unifieds because there are few schools that are an easy car trip from Maine.

Also look at Wright State in Dayton, although they aren’t at Unifieds. Acting majors can audition for all shows (several are in Les Mis this semester). And they don’t have many gen eds to take. D is a freshman, and so far has had “History of Theatre in Western Culture” for her history class (I think they all take it) 1st semester & now is taking “Math in the Modern World” for her math. It’s a little easier than the calculus class she took last year! ;)

Since this thread is about Unifieds, you may want to move the conversation to the recent thread: “Which colleges offer just conservatory training?” It has some other schools you may want to consider, too.

My D is also a Junior looking at BFA and BA programs. We live in Seattle and have family in Chicago. She currently plans to audition in person at Cornish, DePaul, Columbia and Roosevelt-CCPA. Is it better to do Unifieds or audition directly on campus?

@evilqueen I have read that it does not matter whether you audition at the school or at Unifieds, but maybe others could weigh in?

I think the schools with rolling admissions may have less slots by the time the LA Unifieds roll around…

@Times3, yes BU is probably not ideal, but the program itself is attractive. Will check out Otterbein more closely, thanks!

So reading CC I am starting to stress already about the amount of schools D should apply to just to ensure that she has options. We can only attend Unifieds once and that will be in Chicago. How many schools can you realistically audition for without stretching yourself too thin.

For musical theatre, I would recommend two per day due to the dance calls. A number of schools had students choose slots with 3-4 hour blocks of time which was my daughter’s experience. The good thing is that you can take advantage of the Saturday and Sunday before Chicago Unifieds as well. There are non-unified member schools that hold auditions on those days. There may even be a school or two holding Thursday auditions.

My daughter did 9 schools at Chicago Unifieds, Saturday through Wednesday. Like @GSOMTMom says, Sat & Sun options made this plan a home run for us. Time wise, D probably could have added one more school but chose not to in order to save her voice. She did two each day except for Monday, when she did just one. We scheduled it that way to give her a bit of a break halfway through, and had a great fun afternoon at Water Tower Place. If you’re doing schools that require dance calls, 2 per day is pretty much all you can schedule, but once you know the exact times, you can try to add some walk-ins if you want.

My daughter had 8 scheduled auditions at Chicago Unifieds and added 3 walk-ins. She had auditions starting Sunday thru Thursday.

What was the Thursday school, @LoveMyMTGirl? I remembered seeing a school or two early in the process that seemed to do Thursday, but couldn’t remember which they were.

Does SUNY Purchase ever show up at Unifieds (particularly NY) does anyone know?
