Hey guys!
So I am a freshman and I am involved in a lot of clubs and organizations at my school, but nothing out of the ordinary
My main things are Forensics, Model UN, Mock Trial, and Youth leg. These are the events which I win awards in and do well in.
I am a lot of other clubs.and do other stuff outside of school.
I was wondering if you guys had any suggestions of unique ECs (or at least more interesting) that I could do ! I'm into public speaking, politics, international relations, debating, and law. I also really do want to serve others.
All suggestions are welcome and appreciated! Thanks!

You could always try to write on a local newspaper about politics? Also, you could always try to intern for someone in the government, even if it’s just local county gov.

First, I am going to tell you this: Do something you love. It is cliche, but many people only do things to get into top schools. Even if you have a passion for a certain field, maybe try something new. You don’t want to do unique ecs just because it will make you stand out. You have to really enjoy them. Some people are just naturally unorthodox and do unconventional things. I study Persian and Hopak, but I want to be a math major. I don’t really know your personality, so I won’t suggest anything. You should just explore and figure out what you like since only you can determine that.

Now that I think about it, this may not be too helpful, but I can’t stress enough the importance of doing things you like to do. If you want to be really unique, I think you’d have to do something most people aren’t doing.

Fritzitty- that’s a really good idea! I was thinking about interning so that’s definitely something I will look into

Aquiana- I completely agree with you. No point in doing something if you don’t love it! I really just am looking into expanding my knowledge and gaining strength and experience in those subject. I feel it would be an added bonus to that in a way which wasn’t cookie-cutter over achiever ;)

Any other ideas guys?

I was in the same boat as you! Here’s what I ended up doing. Between my freshman and sophomore years in high school, I interned for the Lieutenant Governor. This required no more than an email to the office asking if they’d accept an unpaid intern for any amount of time during the summer. They said, yes for sure. In my junior year I cofounded a nonprofit political journal and wrote several long articles for the journal about politics. In between this time, I honed my interest to education policy and reform. This led me to do a significant amount of volunteer work at a variety of schools around the area and earn a seat on my state’s youth philanthropy board. I was able to write a really nice EC essay about my passion for education. I could include all of my work and my articles in the political journal. Instead of using the activities form on the CommonApp though, I attached a list of education policy related activities and accomplishments. This I think sold me and allowed to be admitted to my first choice college with an early write despite average or below average stats (Swarthmore). And do you know how many hours per week I put into all of these ECs? I’d say no more than 1 or 2. PM me if you want any advice. Helping people cultivate and develop their interests and passions is something I really enjoy.

To be extremely blunt, get off of this website and explore whatever interests you. Excell at whatever that (those) may be, enjoy it, love it, and you will do fine.

@swattiechick: Wow, is this in any state(emailing the lieutenant governor)? Do you know if every state has a philanthropy board?:)
