I know there is an 80 unit cap for transfers to any UC, but, I'm still confused with that in my situation. I'm trying to transfer to Cal from UCSD as a MCB major; however, the advisor says that to transfer I need to have at least a year or organic chemistry and biology. I'm in my first year at Revelle, UCSD - by the end of this year, I'll have completed the necessary bio, but I won't have started or finished the organic chemistry and physics until my sophomore year when theoretically I should apply. Can I still apply in my junior year?

Units
By the end of Freshman year- 60 units
" " " Sophomore year - 108 units

Why cal for mcb over ucsd?

I keep hearing different numbers as far as transferable units. I’m going to Cal if that makes any difference, but is it 80 units that transfer? 70? 60? Like I said, I’ve been hearing conflicting numbers. Can anyone send me a link to Cal or UC’s actual number? This is driving me crazy.

@ satoai. You don’t need to complete all of the necessary classes by the time you apply. Just as long as you complete all those classes by the spring before you transfer. And you can get 105 units before you transfer because you are on the quarter system. If you absolutely NEED to take 108 units to fulfill all of the requirements, I would talk to the adviser and ask which is more important, the unit cap, or not taking one of the requirements.

@smartyskirt01. The 80 (semester) units is not how many units transfer, that Is how many units you can take before transferring and still be admitted. (that is if you took at least some units outside of a ccc)

70 is the maximum amount of units that transfer. If you take more… say, 210 as my friend did, then they will still only take 70. You will still get course credit for prereques and stuff like that, but just have less units.

60 is the minimum amount of units needed to transfer (in most cases).

Q: If my total number of UC transferable units is over 80, am I eligible for admission?
A: Unfortunately, not if you’ve applied to the College of Letters and Science, where most applicants with excess units are denied admission. If you’ve applied to the College of Engineering, Chemistry, Environmental Design, Natural Resources or Haas School of Business, your application will be reviewed and there may be a slight chance of admission with excess transferable units. Exception: If all of your coursework has been or will be completed at one or more California community colleges, you are eligible for admission and the maximum transfer credit you can receive is 70 semester (105 quarter) units.

You are transferring from UCSD which is the quarter system. Cal is semester system… I am curious as a sophomore how you’d be able to have 108 semester units? Thats pretty damn good if so!! good luck
