On the website, it says that freshman can take up to 4.75 units per semester. this means that number of classes that incoming students can take is limited to four..right?

I was actually planning to five classes (less demanding classes-studio art1, swahili/required writing class/two intro- classes) I think it would be very doable since I took AP classes for the two intro classes. I really really want to take all five classes....Is there anyway you can take five classes during the first semster?

Your first semester first-year you can only take four classes, no exceptions. The unit limit is 4.75 because some introductory languages and classes with labs count as 1.25 units instead of 1.00 units. Beginning second semester of your first-year you are eligible to take five classes with your dean’s approval. During your first-year, we really want to make sure that you can handle the workload and won’t be in over your head. We are all really ambitious and want to take advantage of all the classes offered at Wellesley but you also have to figure out how much time you have to spend on your classes.

Your outlined schedule right now of studio art, swahili, writing, and two other intro classes is a heavy load. Studio art takes up lots of time outside of the classroom, and so does an introductory language. Your writing course will obviously require readings and papers. When deciding on schedules, especially your first year when you should really branch out and take classes in varied departments to figure out what you are interested in, you should try to keep a balance between the number of classes you have with papers and problem sets.

You may think that 5 classes is possible, but it’s quite difficult. Studio art takes a lot of commitment and there is plenty of work that goes into it, so I wouldn’t quite say that it’s “less demanding”. Languages at Wellesley require a lot of time outside of the classroom and meet almost every day. Your writing class will require you to constantly write essays. Trust me, 4 classes is enough of a work load.
