As a transfer student from a CC, what is the most amount of units that you can transfer that will also count into your gpa? I know that if you go over the max you only get credit for the course but not the units/gpa. Thanks in advance.

I think 70 will transfer from cc (maybe 90?). I know the max you can have if you have ever been to a 4-year is 90 combined.

70 for Sem and 105 for quar in general. GPA in college is not counted after you transfer to University.

So just to make sure, you can take as many classes as you want in CC but only 70 units will transfer and count into your gpa? The classes that go over the max will only transfer credit, correct?

yes, u can take as many classes as you want in CC (given you haven't attended any other University before taking classes in college), but the GPA will no longer matter once you get accepted. 3.0 or 4.0 will be the same after you got into University cause they will not cumulate your GPA in CC

What if I'm already over 70 units and in my last semester at CC I choose to take Jap 1? (with my foreign language req already done) Will this count towards my gpa at all or even rescind me after I've been admitted if the class brings me below the 3.0 mark?

you do not take your GPA with you.

Are you trying to ascertain what units constitute your application GPA?

the gpa that counts come application time includes ALL of your transferable coursework- not just 70 units.

You will only get unit credit for 70/105 quarter units. After that you get subject credit only.

If your agreement with the UC of choice tells you to maintain a 3.0 or above in all transferable course work and /or all planned coursework than that is what you should do and if not then it CAN get you rescinded

Sorry, if I'm not being very clear as I am asking for a friend. He just finished his 2 years of CC and was accepted into UCSD but rejected from UCLA. He's considering staying another year at CC so he can apply again to UCLA but he wants to raise his gpa for when he applies again. He plans to take classes but that would bring him over 70 units. Would classes taken after 70 units count towards his gpa come application time so as long as they are UC transferable?

the answer is yes. But, the admission officer may view GPA separated in two parts: overall GPA and major requirements GPA. Your friend can only bring up the overall GPA because he has taken all requirement already (except he will change his major). I don't think he should stay in CC 1 more year if his major requirements GPA is low, cause the chance to be admitted in next year should not be increase much compared to this year (he can improve his PSs though)

Well his major is biz econ and his prereq gpa is 3.7 after this semester with TAP completed. He was told by his counselor that he was very borderline. His overall gpa at the time of app was almost 3.6 and he told me this his PSs were pretty mediocre.

he can apply to one of the other majors in the econ department, like international studies- econ , and then change to econ, that would increase his chances slightly (i think the admission rate for intl-econ is slightly higher than bizecon)

Did he call UCLA and ask WHY he was rejected?

Can he take any of his preq courses over, or does he have any preqs left to take ?

He really is not going to bring his gpa much higher even with more classes, he would need to take a lot of useless stuff for a whole year to get a 3.8.

Overall i would suggest he goes to UCSD.

well, 3.7 major GPA for Biz Econ is pretty low. Average overall GPA of admitted student was around 3.81; but remember, their major GPA is usually far above their overall average GPA. I would say he really have to improve his GPA, ECs, Essays ... to have a higher chance.

All majors in the Econ department has pretty close admit rates; I don't think intl Econ is more than 1 or 2% higher than Biz Econ, but you can check it online.

I wonder, which major course(s) brought his GPA down? if it's Math, the solution is easy: take 1-2 higher math level course and complete it with A. if it's Econ (let say he got a B in any Econ class) then ..... I think his chance is really low. He need to have some "strong" actions such as being an Econ tutor or TA; then, discuss about his "improvement" in his PSs "cleverly."

Another way: doing a petition in his cc to retake the class, if the dean is nice enough .... lol

I agree with Malishka, he should go to UCSD instead of staying in CC 1 more year for the modest chance

Ok well he got A's on all his prereqs except for Calc 1 and Eng 2 which he got a B for. The Calc 1 was a real bummer because he was very close to an A and what brought him down was he missed a lot of the pop quizzes due to traffic.

He really seems intent on wanting to go to UCLA so I don't know what to do even though I urged him to just go to UCSD. Though his gpa may only be 3.7 he is TAP certified and I saw plenty of 3.65 and 3.7s with TAP get in this year.

Oh and he sent in a letter of appeal but I don't believe they got back to him. Most likely rejected still.

Cal 1 shouldn't be a big problem, Eng 2 is not a big one too, I would be more worried if that is Econ. I think he may be ok if he rise his GPA close to 3.8 or exceed 3.8 if possible。 (his GPA for admission consideration includes GPA in Fall 08.)

So what do you advise his plan be? Take the next two math classes (multivariable calc and differential equations) and stuff his schedule with as many high unit transferable classes as possible? Or perhaps petition to retake calc 1 and then do that? What classes do you suggest? Econ 1 and 2 he got an A in.

my suggestion is still: get in UCSD, cause 1 year of waiting doesn't really worth for the school name (difference between UCLA and UCSD is not so big)

if he really want to stay 1 more year to raise his GPA, then Math are good courses to take (if possible, take up to Linear Algebra _ what I have regret that I couldn't).

The second is an other additional English course. He can select anything for the rest.

In the next Winter and Spring (if your cc is quarter system). I would recommend him to take Business courses for A.A degree which will really helpful for his future career, this benefit will partly cover the 1 additional year lost in cc.

Have you been at your CC for 3 years as well?

lol, in the first year, I couldn't even listen and understand English TT, I had to take over 50 Units of ESL courses in the first year and half of the second year. That was why. I have about 160-170 units including ESL so far haha. I am senior now ^^. JK

What if he decided to take easier 5 unit courses than math? Courses like chem, geology, spanish, etc. Would this be ok with UCLA?

as I said, he "should" (not "must") take 1-2 more higher level Math and 1 English to because he got 2 B in those subjects (probably increase his chance to get accepted next year). the rest he can choose anything he wants.

If he doesn't want to take Math..... Well, I don;t know, I just think it's not a good choice.
