Units allowed per quarter

Incoming freshman, trying to set up my schedule for the fall quarter. What is the maximum units allowed per quarter? I'm also doing Honors, if that makes any difference.

Also, how many classes does one usually take per quarter?

Usually, incoming freshmen take about 13 - 15 units, which correlates to about 3 or 4 classes. Maximum units allowed is 19, although I would shy away from taking that many your first quarter at UCLA.

When will the schedule of classes for Fall 2011 be available on their website?

Also, does the 13-15 units include Fiat Lux seminars?

The schedule of classes comes out tomorrow. They usually release it on a pdf link the night before, but not sure the exact time. Especially your first quarter, orientation counselors and others will advise you to take 3 classes which is 4-5 units each and any fiat luxes you want to take or not. In future quarters, most UCLA students take 3-4 classes a quarter on average.

The maximum number of units is 19 for the College of Letters and Sciences but 20 for students of HSSEAS.

You are permitted to petition for more credits as needed.

It’s actually 21 for HSSEAS.

Rule of thumb for a freshman is to NOT take more than 3 classes per quarter, and to NOT take more than 2 science classes at the same time.

I would say 3 classes and a Fiat Lux is probably fine as well if you make sure the Fiat Lux isn’t a lot of work. They’re pass/no pass so you don’t have to stress out too much and they’re an amazing way to just explore some subjects of interest in a small group setting with no pressure.

I think that really only goes for your first quarter. I took 4 science classes my 2nd quarter and it wasn’t that bad.

^ Well, you’re obviously a very smart individual, but about 98% of students would say that 4 science classes is insanity. My dad had an old college buddy who was drunk 24/7 and yet he held the highest GPA at his top university taking some of the hardest classes within his major. We can’t all be as brilliant as he was now can we? Bottomline is, stick with 3 classes a quarter and 2 science classes or less your freshman year.

Umm, you don’t even go here yet. I don’t think you’re exactly qualified to make statements about the level of difficulty of classes here.

I’m not in engineering, but if you look at the Sample plans for engineering students you’ll see that they’re all basically expected to take 4 Science classes 1 or 2 quarters their freshman year.

The main reason you’re told not to take 4 classes in the fall is that most people need to time to settle in at the school (outside of just classes) and they basically need to learn how being a college student works. If you make the transition smoothly though, your 2nd quarter isn’t really much different from subsequent quarters. And you’ll have a much better idea by the end of the fall whether you’ve made the transition smoothly.

Personally I would suggest throwing in a North Campus class just so you have something that’s interesting to read and a little less dense (as compared to reading for Math courses). Balance is a desirable trait in a schedule. It’s just not necessary.

I’m only speaking for pre-meds, and Kwwboarder, I may not go there yet, but I know a lot of people that do.

I don’t care how many people you know who go here, to essentially tell someone who has actually experienced the classes that they are wrong when you have no direct experience is dumb.
Also, as far as pre-meds go, I know many who take more than 2 science classes a quarter, so you’re assumption that 98% of people see it as too much work is ludicrous. In fact, my major (because you know, I actually go here) recommends taking more than 2 science/math classes a quarter almost from the get go and includes many quarters with 4 science classes: [UCLA Neuroscience - Incoming Freshmen](http://www.neurosci.ucla.edu/IncomingFreshmen.asp)

So, what you’re saying is that it’s dumb to disagree with a UCLA student who finds 4 science classes at UCLA to be “not that bad”, when I already have close friends in the science classes I want to take, telling me that 4 science classes is a GPA killer? Obviously I was exaggerating with the 98% thing, but what you don’t seem to realize is that UCLA science classes are HARD. All I’m saying is that it’s not the wisest thing to do to advise a freshman to overload their schedule with some of the hardest classes at UCLA, when that person might be way below your own level of academic comprehension. It’s really redundant to create a stressful schedule that might ruin your GPA when you can easily finish your major with 3 classes per quarter and one summer class per summer, while still having enough time to prepare yourself for the MCAT (if you’re a pre-med).

How does this look (math+neurosci double major)? I worked on it this morning. Obviously this isn’t final but this is pretty much the general picture of what I want to take this year.

Fall 2011 (Includes both lecture and discussion)

MATH32AH (TA) - MTWF 9-9:50 - 4 UNITS
CHEM20AH (Felker) - MTWF 11-11:50 - 5 UNITS
LS1 (Alfaro) - MTWF 12-1:50 - 4 UNITS
Fiat Lux?

Winter 2012

MATH32BH - 4 UNITS
MATH33AH - 4 UNITS
CHEM20B - 4 UNITS
CHEM20L - 3 UNITS

Spring 2012

MATH33B - 4 UNITS
PHYSICS1B - 5 UNITS
LS2 - 5 UNITS

I’m really prioritizing my math courses. The honors math courses aren’t offered in every quarter, most are offered in only 1 quarter, so I have to take them when offered.

What do you guys think?

I don’t think people usually take LS1 their first quarter (actually afaik LS2 is usually the first LS class people take). It’ll probably fill up too, but it’s probably a good idea to take a North Campus GE there instead. You also need to take 1A before 1B.

Remember to be flexible. You never know how whether time conflicts will come up. I see that Math 32BH is on the tentative list, but it’s not scheduled right now, so I’m not sure what’s going to happen there.

Yes

Nobody advised students to overload their schedule with some of the hardest classes at UCLA. You said freshmen should NOT take more than 3 classes per quarter and NOT take more than 2 science classes at the same time. The first is terrible advice, and the 2nd is a decision that should be left up to the individual. Nobody needs to tell 2nd and 3rd quarter 1st years what they can’t handle.

I already have AP credit for Mechanics so I’m using that.

I want to finish LS1 and LS2 freshman year, but there’s so many chem and math classes to take.

AP Physics doesn’t get you out of Physics 1A.

^ All I can say is: enjoy your 4 science classes…
