i had created a thread a thread here
http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/university-mississippi/924116-ole-miss-how-racist.html

but it seems that was a wrong section. i had asked to move it here but guess evry1 is busy.
well.. so what do u guys think about it ?

They will accept you no matter what, as long as your mom is Sandra Bullock.

omg ! haha why would u say that?
no seriously …i wanna noe what kinda people are studying there…how friendly they are… attitude towards foreign students etc etc…
but thanks ill keep that in mind ^ lol

I don’t know anything about Ole Miss, but you can check out these review sites just to get some idea of what others think (you might have seen them already, though):

 • According to PR’s student surveys, Ole Miss ranks 14th for “Little Race/Class Interaction.” That being said, I don’t know how seriously you should take those rankings.

there was a documentary made a few years ago about a black student who was trying to run for student gov at ole miss and how “the machine” - aka the predominantly white greek scene that dominates student gov - prevented her from winning. idk if any ole miss person would admit that there school is racist per se, but i definitely think that there’s probably little interracial interaction.

@flushmaverick
thanks for the links mate! i dint find the uni.go link before.
in the un.igo link all the reviews do say atleast about the segregation btwn races.
majority will obviously be whites then next would be blacks and hardly any asians so that can be difficult… like no social life?

@icanread
ill take that as another +1 ? :/

Well, it is in Mississippi. However, if you’re an athlete than I’m sure you’ll be fine around campus ;].

thanks mentalmystic …i played basketball and shotput at school… dont think thats gonna help me much tho ;)

well let me tell you guys something about my situation my grades arent ANY good… well thats what i think .i dont have a GPA in my system(actually ima GED guy)… bt my gpa would be something between 3.0-3.2 ive taken SAT recently(may one)… i dont know how good that was but a safe bet would be a lil above-below 1000 (CR+M), so i need an easy school to get into.
Ole miss was the biggest and easiest school to come to my mind…some others i found on researching would be
UCR
SDSU
univ of oklahoma
Ohio university
UWF
ASU(said dint accept GED for international students)
somewhere i read UGA was too easy to get into too!.. i highly doubt that… is it true?

oh btw … also plz temme wat wud my chances b in d listd univs … and any other easy ones u can think of ?

^should i make a separate thread for that or is this one fine ?
p.s im new here :)

@ sparkz. wvu has something like a 90% acceptance rate.

they fly confederate flags at football games and have a strong sense of southern pride

some people think that’s racist, some don’t

I’m not in college, but my mom (I’m black) went to Ole Miss in the early 80s. She grew up in Oxford, and we visit about once a year; in fact, we just went there a couple weeks ago. My mom says she didn’t really have any bad experiences at Ole Miss. She says her white classmates were never outwardly racist or malicious in any way. However, when we visit there, I never see a group of college-aged (I say college-aged because I obviously don’t know for sure if they’re all Ole Miss students) kids of different races hanging out together. I don’t see many non-white college kids at all, to tell you the truth. When we visited a few weeks ago, they were having the “Double-Decker” (some kind of festival, I think) in Oxford. There were tons of college-aged kids, but I never saw an integrated group, so maybe there’s some self-segregation going on in the community. Like I said, these are just some things I’ve noticed. Even though Ole Miss has a bit of a bad reputation, my mom shows a lot of pride whenever she talks about going there (she actually wants me to apply). The only thing she refuses to do, though, is buy any Ole Miss gear that says “Rebels” on it or has a picture of the mascot on it.

@icanread hey buddy,i did look around for reviews on wvu (im guessing you are saying west virginia university) at college.prow.ler website it shows the admission at the university as ‘hard’
comparing to universities like uga which has admission difficulty ‘average’… im confused

@logicwarrior im an asian buddy… it shudnt matter me right?

@BryDeec thank you for your ‘first hand’ story man!, if she does refuse you to buy ole miss outfits surely there has been ‘something wrong’ shes been hiding/dosent want you to know…maybe a bad xperience?

thanks for all the info guys… im obviously gonna think over applying to ole miss again…

does any1 noe any more good universities with easy admission policies ?

thanks evry1 ! :)

Hey there. I may be a tad late, but I’d love to give my two cents!
As a current Ole Miss student (white, female, OOS), my perspective may be a bit different than the typical cynical opinions that other CC members seem all-too-eager to voice regarding my University. I’ll be completely honest: racism is here, but racism (unfortunately) is everywhere as much as other Universities would have you believe it’s not. Reality is much different than what the media or popular opinion would like you to think.
I’d say, overall, we have a generational shift on campus. There is an overwhelming sentiment among students that racism is intolerable, a far cry from their parents’ or grandparents’ sentiments. I’m not going to lie, a lot of us take pride in being part of the change. Integration on the everyday level still has improvements to make, but at the same time I can walk across campus with my white or black or Asian friends and not get a second glance. And response to the Greek machine, it exists, but the ASB executive board has been racially integrated since I’ve been a student.
Confederate flags are outlawed at football games, and have been for some time. Our old mascot was dropped some years ago. You could say that the football culture is going through a sort of renaissance.
Ole Miss also has a surprisingly large international presence. There is a popular Intensive English Program on campus, so you may be surprised at the international diversity the University has to offer. I’ve met kids from Southeast Asia, South America, from the program. This, again, from the University of Mississippi.
In short, before you dismiss Ole Miss I suggest you take another look. I’m here to field any additional questions if you have any. Good luck on your search!

hey baimao i havnt been online in a while so sorry cudnt reply u earlier. i do understand that racism seems to be everywhere its just that everyone seems to be saying ole miss is one of the most racist universities in america,
honestly its good to have ppl around like you who can go about making a change about such major issues in the world =)…
i am a social person so i would want to have alot of friends, and i do not believe in self-segregation i have friends of all ethnicities here, of what ive read ole miss is completely divided as blacks and whites and no mingling between them. is there that much self segregation ?
and,We dont have a greek system here in my country but reading about it on internet gives me ‘hints’ about greeks being more racist and for ‘whites only’ kind. is that true ?
and you being a current student and giving opinions matter alot ,so thank you baimao ;)

there are racists everywhere. even online. but at ole miss, i’m not going to lie like there aren’t. have i experienced any racism while on campus (im an incoming freshman)? no. have i experienced any amount of discrimination? yes.

about the greeks and racism. i give you this link about kim dandridge. a black girl who was accepted into phi mu and the commotion that came with it.

I grew up on a rural Native American reservation out west. My parents liked to travel in early childhood. One time I asked them if we could go to Disneyworld, but they did not want to do it. They spoke about the racist events from the 1960s and saw the “Deep South” as pure Ku Klux Klan territory. So they did not trust the idea of traveling through the south with Native American children. We never went to Florida.

Years later, I was working as an engineer out west when the recession hit my industry hard. I was forced to look across the country to stay employed. I got a job in Florida. I have lived here about ten years. In my experience, the southerners are generally very nice and respectful. I had feared KKK activity and a large amount of “southern bigotry.” But that hasn’t really been the case. Colorado was worse because of the tension regarding affirmative action. I think Arizona and Texas have worse racial tension between Hispanics and whites because of 1072.

As for Mississippi, I did hear some horror stories from the older generation. One middle-aged women told me of her work experience and witnessed blatant racism and gender discrimination from older white men. But my guess is that the younger generation is relatively more progressive. However, Mississippi and other southern states are large enough that old-style racism can still be occasionally found. There was a group of white teens who attacked an African American man recently. But statistically, that type of animosity is not as prevalent as the 1950s.

As for Native Americans and the south, most of them were removed by President Andrew Jackson in the “Trail of Tears” in the 1830s to modern Oklahoma. But many Native Americans had already intermarried with whites at that point. The Southern Confederate Army actually had a very large faction of Cherokee Indians, and the white southerners intermarried with Cherokees a lot. Their descendents are still in the south with mostly Caucasian features, but the Cherokee ancestry is real. John Wayne showed it best in his movie “The Undefeated” when a white southern belle falls for a full-blooded Cherokee Scout. It’s still like that. My most recent girlfriend was a southern belle. Go figure.
