Universities in France

Does anyone know the well-known/reputable universities in france?

I plan to do a summer there and learn immersion french like hardcore.

The Grandes Ecoles are the most reputable unis in France.
They are like super-hardcore to get in.

École Polytechnique

What about the more chilled out ones? From what I know, this schools offer engineering and science programs. But I wanna learn french.

What about the like of AUP or Sorborne or University of Paris?

Parisian speaking here. Basically, the three cool student towns to go to are Paris, of course (even though it's gotten really expensive), Toulouse, and Montpellier.
If you care about prestige, the Grandes Ecoles are indeed the way to go, but they have many disadvantages: they are really hardcore to get in, no way of getting in with ECs or exceptional life experience, like a 9/11 survivor. They won't care. Also, you will not see much of Paris since you will spend your time studying. Finally, they don't let much room for international students, except maybe for Sciences Po.
Tell me what you want to study, and I'll tell you where to look, because the University of Paris system was broken up after the '68 riots. For instance, I go to University of Paris I, Pantheon-Sorbonne. Depending on your major, you'll have to apply to different colleges.

If you know little or no French, it's no use applying to a French University where all courses will be taught in French. If you study French at a French university it will be like studying English Literature in the English-speaking world. You need to consider language schools and summer schools (such as www.ef.com), not the French university system which requires a high standard of French from the outset. If you are already enrolled in a US college they may have a summer programme specifically for learning French.
