I'm from Israel, 21, and applying to undergrad in the States. I'm mostly applying to liberal arts colleges since they are the schools who can give me financial aid. However, if that falls through, I want to take a loan and go to a school with a rather cheap out-of-state tuition (around 20K or less). My academic stats are pretty good (3.7 GPA, 112 on the TOEFL, probably between 2000-2200 on the SAT) and I have a lot of leadership, work, and EC activities. I'm very sociable and I like to have fun and party but I also want a decent academic environment and interesting people. I'm applying to Florida State and I wanted to ask you if you could think of any other fun schools with low out-of-state tution (Ole Miss maybe?)

U. of Arkansas and LSU as well. U. of South Dakota and South Dakota State are very inexpensive, but I’m not sure that they’d meet your “fun” criterion.

University of Minnesota has out-of-state tuition costs for international students of approximately $17,000, with total costs of about $30,000. If you were able to submit an application by December 15th, you would receive priority consideration for academic scholarships. It’s an excellent school in a great city, but the weather might be problematic for you.

When you say “around $20k or less” for tuition…do you mean tuition only? What about room, board, personal expenses, travel costs? What is your budget for that?

Do you realize that to get your visa to come here, you will need to show that you have the funds in an account?

Alabama…OOS tuition $20k…strong academics, fun and beautiful campus.

You can use [College MatchMaker - Type of School](<a href=“College Search - BigFuture | College Board”>College Search - BigFuture | College Board) to search for institutions that meet your tuition limits. Under the Costs & Financial Aid category, select the maximum tuition from the Out-of-State column, and it will pull up a list for you.

Several of the public universities in Minnesota do not charge OOS tuition and fees. However, coming from Israel, the weather would be a truly new adventure for you.

Some of the CSUs (california state colleges). Great weather and parties: UCSD. With your engineering interest Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, great college town near beaches.

I was going to suggest the SUNYs too; compared to other OOS tuitions it’s seriously a bargain. Tuition is about 14k and room+board is around 10k. Binghamton and Geneseo are closest to your level.

Agree with the SUNYs being very good values…but not in warm areas! You might also look at University @ Buffalo, which has a large international student population and a great honors college. UB offers international students merit aid which would bring the total cost, including health insurance (which almost all international students will need), down to around $23K. Afaik, Bing and Geneseo don’t offer merit aid to freshmen students.

yes, the highest ranked schools where FULL PAY OOS tuition/fees/room/board are under $30k are:

BYU (private, Mormon) around $16k for non-LDS members
Cal Poly San Luis Obispo around $25k.
Minnesota around $25k
SUNY (Stony Brook, Geneseo, Binghamton, etc.) around $25k
