University at Buffalo Class 2023 Thread

@tlg520 UB was initially a “backup” school for us as well, but I would say mainly because of the distance from home. I never considered it a second rate school by any means, just a similar school but much further away. That and we’ve never visited. I’ll also add in that we CT folk have heard all the tales about Buffalo Winters, which last 11 months out of the year, and it snows 3 feet every day

@spqr70nj more details! What impressed you the most? Which dorms did you like best?

The campus really grew over time. I recalled that several years ago they expanded with a mathematics building adjacent to the Fronzcak Physics building…this is closest to the Governors Residence Complex. In addition, they added an entirely new engineering building to the existing engineering complex which houses Computer Science and advising offices. The stadium area was altered to allow room for the new Murcie Fieldhouse (UB Football indoor practice facility). Huge! This is all on the North Campus. As I mentioned there is student apartment housing scattered all along the highway that circles around the North Campus complex. We also visited the South Campus to show my son what that campus was like and where his dad started his UB story many years ago. Both Goodyear (my former freshman dorm) and Clement Residence Halls were renovated and looks like the cafeteria had a facelift. Looks like the window on both buildings were redone. South Campus looked beautiful as always - very ivy league looking. Unfortunately, he would most like not have classes on that campus as most undergraduate majors will be on the North Campus. For that reason, if he goes with UB, I would prefer that it is on the North Campus, specifically Ellicott. Within the Ellicott Complex you have 6 of the original residence halls all interconnected with a tunnel to take the bus to the academic spine in bad weather. The additional Greiner Hall is both mixed residential and classroom/office space. Second floor outside terrace connects all Ellicott buildings. I am partial to Ellicott - specifically Richmond and Wilkeson - as those two buildings were where I was a Resident Advisor and Assistant Hall Director during my time at UB.

As for the academic program, I was very impressed with their engineering curriculum. The School of Engineering and Applied Science (SEAS) is SUNY’s largest school and has about 5,000+ undergraduates. First year curriculum is similar to other first year engineering programs we have looked at other schools and are ABET accredited. As mentioned in earlier posts, the academic spine is connect and therefore students do not need to go outside unless walking to Alumni Arena. That is the only standalone building that was never connected - unless they burrowed a tunnel between it and the Media Studies building. LOL When we arrived on Sunday the place was almost deserted because it was the end of their Spring Break - I had no idea, But on Monday when we had the academic meeting and tour, the campus was bustling with a lot of students. By noon, more had arrived for classes from Ellicott and the Student Union was packed.

If you are visiting or eventually become a student or parent of a student, you must have Duff’s Buffalo Wings about a mile away from campus. I literally cry when I eat those wings because they are so good! LOL Anchor Bar (founding Buffalo wings establishment) is another place for excellent wings but is located downtown at the original spot.

So that is a quick take on my recent visit…let me know if you have any questions or need additional info!

Thank you @spqr70nj ! Sounds like fun! Do you know anything about the engineering LLC? Also, are there restaurants scattered around campus? Did they say what the first semester curriculum will be? I know Calc and Chem for those who dont have AP, but what else? So, did your son make a decision? How was WVU? I wanted my son to apply there as well but WV gets a bad rap. Which campus was his favorite?

It’s now April and I haven’t heard anything. On my application status page it just has a green check mark and says “received” for all the required parts. I emailed on 3/18 asking when I can expect to receive a decision and I just got the basic “please keep an eye on your admission status page for updates”…should I just give up hope? Has anyone gotten rejection letters or do they just leave you hanging?

@kae011 Where are you looking for this status update? I hope not the Common App site because decisions and status are not posted there. I would either call or email admissions and ask for an update.

It’s the UB Connect page that they give you the link to once your application is processed, plus I used the SUNY app

I would call them this morning. They may want you to submit an email requesting an update, but have them confirm.

Actually just emailed. Tried not to be too annoying so I just asked if “received” meant that it was being reviewed or if it was just present in the system, and that I would appreciate any update they could give me

I applied back in December and I still haven’t heard, anyone know what’s going on? Anyone else with this problem also?

I applied in September, and apparently some people who applied in February got decisions like 2-3 weeks later. I have no idea what they’re doing. But I’m glad I’m not the only one who they seem to be ignoring

Daughter applied back in November and had to submit Q2 grades, called admissions and was told she would hear in a few weeks that was three weeks ago

My son also applied in November and submitted mid-year grades. He has not heard back either. I assume that’s not a good sign.

I have called and was told that decisions will all be complete by May 1. Am I crazy or is this too late ? We have other schools of interest but this was one of the top and waiting on them is slowly moving them off the list. How can they expect you to wait that long and end up having to make such a speedy decision ? Good luck to all !

Congratulations to all of the new UB families! I think it’s a great school; have a son who spent 4 wonderful years there and there was not a department I found lacking in quality and rigor.

It’s better than a letter saying you’re not accepted

Without knowing for sure, I’d guess that those who have not received a decision yet have 2 things against them: the major they’re interested in and their grades/stats. There are only so many spots in each major. At this point, I think they’re waiting for some who were accepted early to decline - then they can backfill. My two cents.

I could tell the lady got mad when I emailed cause of the passive aggressiveness…too late now

Hey @kae011 may I ask your stats?

@HankCT I got a 1028 on the SAT and a 3.2 GPA, not amazing but I think my essay was good and and I had two really good recc letters from some teachers
