Your research – and us – have already told you that there aren’t options in California or Florida that meet your needs.
Earlier in the thread we gave you lots of other options in other states. Explore those schools - many are still taking applications and offer FA to out of state/international students. None are in California or Florida – but may be in more interesting areas than southern Utah.
@katliamom
Already got your point. Thanks.
Southern Utah seems to he the best one from all options you gave me yet. I was however looking for a bigger university with a focus on athletics. Minnesota State Mankato and West Texas A&M would be an option, but somehow a compromise thinking of the rest.
I’m not sure you understand what ‘southern Utah’’ means, culturally speaking.
We’re concerned you’re making a choice you may regret.
If you want to attend a university in Florida - which will be cheaper by far than California - attend a cc with an automatic admission system. Broward college, then fiu or fau. Tcc2fsu is another one - automatic admission to fsu if you complete your pre-reqs and have a minimum GPA. The same deal’s available if you want to attend Penn State and ask to start in Harrisburg or Erie but the last two years will likely be too expensive. Same possibility and caveats in Ohio. The Florida cc to university deal is probably the cheapest one for you.
OP, you mentioned Truman State several posts ago. It probably has a bit more of are reputation outside of its region than the other schools you are discussing (for fellow CCers, it makes it into the Fiske Guide, at least). It has pretty solid academics (which I believe, I know a professor who teaches there whom I consider to be quite briliant). About 1/4 of the students are from outside Missouri. Regarding weather, it has winter, but nothing like what you would experience in Bemidji or Mankato State or U Wisconsin schools (Truman’s would be not as cold and shorter).
I have been to the Mankato college (now called Minnesota State Mankato, they changed the name a few years ago). My kid went to an all day competition there run by a linguistics professor. It was a nicer and larger campus than I expected. Really rural, though. I’d probably pick Truman over it got better weather and stronger academics. I’d pick Truman over Bemidji, too – the Bemidji students will almost all be from that region of Minnesota. The Bemidji area does have a lot of natural beauty, but Truman will be better academically.
You are being too coy about your test scores. Tell us what they are – it helps us make more appropriate recommendations.
@intparent
My SAT scores are 1050 in Critical Reading and Maths. So exactly US average, or slightly above. I’ll check out Truman State again. Thanks.
@MYOS1634
Good you posted that!
So what does Southern Utah mean? I know most people living there are Mormons and they’re probably very conservative. But students are more liberal, I think? I’m not really conservative though.
So do you think Florida is a better option than attending a 4-year college straight away? I’ll check out some CCs there.
In Southern Utah, it would be reasonable to expect that most of the students are also from that location, and also are very conservative.
That was one of the first things I checked. They have about 20% out of state students. How would their conservative way of life affect me? Do they hate people who are non-LDS?
That sounds low for Truman State. You are probably a bit below the 25th percentile for them. But as you will probably be full pay, you still might get in.
This is an interesting article. It is from 2 years ago, an excerpt from the NACAC list of who still had space and was accepting applications at that time. If I were you, I would look at where your SAT is at least close to the average (not much under it), and look them up to see what full cost is (as an international, you may not get any aid). See if any of them are in your cost range. Truman State is on the list, but as mentioned above, your scores are low. I would research these schools, and contact any where the price seems right and your SATs are in the ballpark – even if their websites don’t say so, they may still be taking applications this spring.

I think you posted the wrong link @intparent .
Weird… that is the link at the top of the page. If you Google “fortune 2014 50 great colleges seeking students”, you get links to the 2014 and 2013 Fortune articles. You have to click through a couple screens to get to the list.
They will not hate you for being non-LDS. The practicing LDS students will not drink alcohol or caffeinated beverages, and they will participate in a lot of church-related activities. Some will not date non-LDS students. Some of the students will have completed religious mission work outside the US (usually 2 years for men and 1 1/2 years for women). For more information, check out https://www.mormon.org/
None of us can tell you how this would affect your life as a student. I have non-LDS relatives and friends who live in Utah and love it there. They do a lot of skiing in the winter and hiking in the national parks in the summer.
@intparent
Thanks, checked it out. Most universities offer only few aid to international students, but I’ve emailed Cornell College.
@MYOS1634 , Broward College would be waaay to expensive (20,000$/year) and then attending a Florida university (30,000$/year) is above the budget.
@happymomof1 , thanks. Now I need to know how conservative the students really are. I’ll check with the international students counsellor at Southern Utah.
I just took a look at the NACAC list and there are still many colleges accepting applications. If you know the colleges could you please take a quick look at the list and tell me which colleges could maybe offer me enough scholarships with a SAT score of 1050/1600 (total 1490)?
