Sorry for the long post. I've bolded the most important parts in case it's too much. :)

I'm looking to transfer to UAF for their Petroleum Engineering program. I originally applied to UAF during my senior year in high school (2010) for their Business Program and was accepted. However, this was more due to a desire to go to an out-of-state school than to attend UAF specifically--I had applied to nearly all out-of-state schools save 1 (I'm from Massachusetts) and didn't have any idea what I wanted to major in--and so my parents ultimately talked me out of it. I ended up attending the single in-state school I applied to, Suffolk University, for about 3 weeks before withdrawing. This was really stupid on my part (seeing as it was just long enough in to owe the full tuition and get a transcript full of W's), but at the time I was depressed that I ended up at an in-state school and, not knowing what I wanted to major in, took a bunch of random classes that didn't interest me at all.

For the spring semester of that year I transferred to Salem State/B, due to the convenience and my apathy towards the whole shebang. **Once again, I withdrew and received all W's.

Now, I know this was all incredibly stupid (and I deeply regret it), so you needn't remind me so. :P

Anyways,** I finally returned this past semester and got my act together. I took the full 15 credits with a generic business curriculum--Financial Accounting, Intro to Marketing, Sociology, Finite Math, and Public Speaking (which is a required course at Salem State)--and got an A in everything.** This has inspired me to care about school again, and therefore I have been spending most of my time lately considering what it is I want to major in.

Over the past couple months I've become more and more interested in settling on an engineering degree. Actually, I've pretty much decided that that's where I'm headed. Out of the engineering degrees, Petroleum Engineering interests me for a variety of reasons, not the least of which is the pay, what the work entails, and the overall adventure of it. In researching good schools for PetE, what turns up? UAF. Now, as I said, I had initially applied to UAF because I wanted to go somewhere exotic. I love the cold, the outdoors, and, of course, the beauty of Alaska. I also like the remote, libertarian lifestyle that AK has to offer. Thus, it seems I've found my perfect match, and for the first time I'm actually excited about the school I'm applying to, where it's located, and the major I'd be applying for.

My question is: How selective is UAF's PetE program? I know they're a relatively non-selective school. Should I apply for the next fall semester? My worry is that my first two semesters will prevent me from being accepted. Should I instead attend Salem State for another year, build up my transcripts more, and then apply? If so, what sort of classes should I start taking toward the PetE degree?

Also, in case it's relevant, my SAT scores were 2080--750 Math/670 Reading/660 Writing/B and my *HS GPA was 3.7 (though I got terrible grades in my Junior year and did *decently in my Senior year... my Freshman and Sophomore years were the ones that buoyed me). The only AP class I took was Stats, which I got an A+ in but didn't take the AP test for (because, again, I was being dumb and didn't know what I wanted in life).

Thanks for the help, and sorry for the long read!
