I'm choosing between the University of Binghampton, University of Delaware, and University of Maryland, College Park.
I want to major in mechanical engineering. I would have to take out an extra $10000 in loans each year for Udel and UMD compared to Bing, and for Udel I have to maintain 3.0 GPA for a scholarship, as for UMD, a 3.2. Their all great schools, but bing's quality (as in no reputation) of engineering school scares me. I'm in college park scholars for UMD and the Udel honors program, but no honors for bing. I know there will be less pressure at bing and I will be less in debt if I wen there. But, i much rather go to a college with an actual town or a city like D.C. by it and I rather go to a college that at least has a decent sports program I can root for. Also, dorms at UMD don't seem as nice as the other schools, but I might get props for being a scholar. My main question is: Is there that much a drop-off in the mechanical engineering program at bing that its worth taking out $40000 more in loans? Thanks for responses.

University of Binghampton vs University of Delaware vs University of Maryland, College Park Engineer

Bump Can I have some help please? :-/

I feel as though going to UMD would be your best bet. As far as the reputation of the University of Binghampton goes, I’ve never heard of it before. Between UD and UMD, I feel as though your hesitation is caused by a difference in rooming vs. education. I guess that could come down to personal preference, but I would definitely choose education over nicer housing, especially with the increased cost for the two schools. The reason I say that is I haven’t seen UD on any major lists for engineering, whereas UMD pops up in a lot of places. This may just be that I missed it’s presence as I wasn’t actively looking for it, though. And congratulations on being a College Park Scholar! That’s definitely something that should sway your decision. Again, I’d say College Park. Good luck!

Thank you Govardhen. Binghampton just build a new engineering building, so they are investing in the program, but I still don’t think it comes close to UMD or UD. Also, I like to pursue a 5 yr MBA. I just might be forced to go to bing b/c UMD and UD are simply not affordable. More help please?

You might want to start by learning the name of the school. It’s Binghamton University, or SUNY Binghamton, with no P.

That said, Bing may not have a big reputation for engineering, but as the top SUNY, the overall recruiting is excellent. Maryland is very good in all respects, but I’m not sure it’s worth an extra 40k in loans. You can get the same job or grad school admission from Bing. Throw out Delaware. For same cost, Maryland is far superior.

Why do you want an MBA?

My dad suggest a 5 year MBA and I guess it make sense because engineers never get to learn the business side of things and my dad said it would of really helped him back then. Any more thoughts from anybody?

Bump… Please help

Engineering economics is a required course at many engineering schools these days.

While I certainly understand the cost factor of going to Binghamton, instate, I would like to emphasize that Bing does not have a highly regraded Mech. Eng program. I was unaware of this when me son applied (and was accepted and loved Bing) but was then informed by current students to stay away for Engineering and Math. Fortunately he had other choices, so we crossed Bing off the list.

As far as Honors programs go, your resume over your 4 years of college, plus your GPA will get you a job and not an Honors program.

I also don’t know what the fall semester internship/job placement fair is like (or if they have them) at Bing. Find out the answer!

Buffalo and Stony Brook are highly ranked/regarded in engineering. I’d suggest going to Bing for a year. Get good grades and transfer, or at least make a well informed decision to stay. Avoid loans if you can!!! U Del and UMD would be a great location for any student, but think hard about paying off those loans for 4 yrs of fun. Hard decision for a kid to make! Your options seem to be UDel, UMD, or one yr at Bing. (Maybe Bing’s engineering has improved. Try to find impartial students to ask. Find out more about there program and internship/job placements. There is nothing wrong with Bing in general. Many happy and intelligent students there that decided to attend this prestigious SUNY, IS (relative low cost) over other schools. You can be very happy there.

Really? I personally know five Binghamton math grads. Four were hired as actuaries for major insurance companies. The fifth was hired as quant analyst for Goldman Sachs. What’s wrong with Binghamton math?

Sorry Chardo- Just reporting what I heard. Doesn’t mean that none of the students will be hired for work. Binghamton has some great recruiters (for business program) from what I’ve heard and those friends employed children.

Engineering is supposedly weak. It has the newest engineering program of the SUNYs except Albanys Nanoscience program.

I did suggest the OP do his research. Find out the percent of grads that are hired in engineering upon graduation. Summer internships? Internship/career fair?

Cost being a factor, I would suggest Bing engineering and take it from there.
