[] Essays (Include Subjects):
[li] Common App Main: It was about an accident my father got into when I was ten years old and how that event shaped me as a person. I did my best, but there’s still this nagging feeling it could have been better. 9. [/li][
] EC Short Answer:
[] Extended essay(which topic): I made up my own prompt about narratives in history being skewed towards the victors. It started off strong, but sleepiness got the best of me and I ended up submitting a final product that was a tad rage-against-the-machine and, now that I look back on it, a bit preachy. 8.
[
] Optional Essay: I just wrote about some of my favorite things. I don’t really want to give this one a score because I can’t really quantify it. 9, I guess?
[] Why Chicago: This one was by far my favorite. I talked about how modern school systems stifled openness, insight, and creativity, and how UChicago is beyond that. 10. [/ul]
[li] Other:[ul][/li][li] Teacher Recommendation #1: My 10th grade English teacher who really likes me. I haven’t seen it, but I’m assuming it’s pretty good. [/li][

[
] Gender: Female
[] Income Bracket: ~100K
[
] Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): Not much. I suppose minority status, but I doubt that had too much influence. [/ul]

Reflection[ul]
[] Strengths: Why Chicago essay, Common App Essay, Teacher Recs, Extracurriculars
[
] Weaknesses: Test Scores, Senior Year Course Load, maybe my extended essay.
[] Why you think you were accepted/deferred/rejected: It’s a crapshoot. I honestly expected rejection, so being waitlisted is at least better than what I expected. Who really knows why anyone gets admitted, waitlisted, or rejected? I really think it’s a person-to-person basis.
[
] What would you have done differently?: Worked harder on my essays, turned in my app earlier, and getting my midyear report in on time (It was 12 days late). [/ul]

Other Factors:
**General Comments/Congratulations/Venting/Commiserations, etc: **College is a crapshoot, especially with really selective schools like UChicago. I’m sort of disappointed, but at the same time, I’m proud of being waitlisted by a school of UChicago’s caliber. I offer good luck to everyone on the waitlist like me, sympathy to those denied, and congratulations to those accepted. I’m still holding out hope!

[ ] Why you think you were accepted/deferred/rejected:I showed my character via my essays and demonstrated to the adcom of how uchicago was a perfect fit for me and how my beliefs correspond to uchicago’s mantra and such. Also, how uchicago would foster an enivornment for me to grow my knowledge in the math/econ fields which uchicago is renowned for being the top in.
[ ] What would you have done differently?:

[ b]Other Factors:
Nothing, honestly. In regards to college, knowing to do extracurriculars that related to my major would’ve helped me.
[ b]General Comments/Congratulations/Venting/Commiserations, etc:
: I’m honestly pretty surprised by the acceptance. Anyone who got waitlisted or rejected, remember that Uchicago is not the be all end all. You all will get accepted to somewhere awesome and do some remarkable things there. Lastly, the college itself does not determine your success, you decide your success.

[ list] I am actually the first in my family to go to college.
[ ] Strengths: I think I somehow made it clear in my application that my SAT II’s were more important for my major (ChemE) than my SAT I’s. I think I’m pretty okay at writing, and that my GPA was solid. I can also bench like a gorilla or steroids, but I don’t think that’s the strength your referring to?
[ ] Weaknesses: My stunning beauty.
[ ] Why you think you were accepted/deferred/rejected: Honestly, I have absolutely no clue. But if I were to take a guess, I’d say it’s my solid SAT II’s. What kind of school is gonna focus on how well you can memorize a list of words over REAL maths and chemistry questions? I really hope I get in on the waitlist though, even though I know it’s impossible.
[ ] What would you have done differently?:

[ b]Other Factors:
Focused more on my SATs. Maybe kissed a little more ass to my teachers so I could have gotten a fucking perfect recommendation.
[ b]General Comments/Congratulations/Venting/Commiserations, etc:
Honestly, HUGE FUCKING CONGRATS to everyone that got in! You guys deserve it, and I know you’ll make awesome students at UChicago. As for me, all I gotta say is, fuck school, I’m off to Australia for 3 months to suck up some sun and get high on life.

This doesn’t reflect how smart or great of a student you are. If you applied to top schools like UChi, it already says that you are a great person who will succeed wherever you end up. ] Optional Essay: Very casual writing about a music community that helped me embrace the quirkier aspects of myself… not sure if this was a good topic. Also listed my favorite books/music/films which are pretty unique, but I don’t know if that helped or hurt in any way. ???/10
[] Why Chicago: Ehh not great. This was the last one I wrote and I was very nervous about it. My first draft was extremely genuine and passionate but it was 500 words over at least hahaha. So when it was edited, I had to rearrange a lot and had trouble finding a good flow. Meh 6/10
[
] Teacher Recommendation #1: A teacher that I had for Humanities last year and AP Lit this year. She really loves me and she’s a huge inspiration to me, but I was pretty quiet in both classes so it probably could have been better. 8.5/10
[] Teacher Recommendation #2: US History teacher, pretty last minute and have noo idea what she might have written. She’s really sweet though and definitely liked me so hopefully 6 or 7/10?
[
] Counselor Rec: The counselors at my school never really get to know us, so it was probably generic. 7/10
[] Interview: Didn’t have one… see below
[
] Art Supplement: Didn’t submit, but kinda wish I did. I do some non-serious art for myself but I probably could’ve found something. I also could’ve added a french horn recording. C’est la vie [/ul]

Reflection[ul]
[] Strengths: I think my uncommon essay was pretty good. I have lots of extracurriculars but nothing astronomical. I’m well-rounded (especially academically) and unique and passionate.
[
] Weaknesses: TEST SCORES, seriously. My teacher recs could have been better probably. My class rank/gpa is also not that high (but can be attributed to my dedication to unweighted band classes I guess.) Well-roundedness could have been interpreted as flimsiness.
[] Where else: Rejected ED Columbia / Accepted University of Vermont, Cazenovia, Ursinus, Champlain, Binghamton (see below) / Still waiting Harvard, Fordham, Simmons, Mt Holyoke, Smith
[
] Why you think you were accepted/deferred/rejected: Hard to tell. Haha I wasn’t expecting this at all.
[li] What would you have done differently?: In general, I should’ve worked way more on test scores (I guess that’s not always make or break, but that’s one thing I wouldn’t have needed to worry about.) I wish I had tried to do an internship or something extraordinary beyond regular high school achievement. I wish I had worked to form stronger relationships with my favorite teachers who value me academically (for rec letters). [/li]For UChi specifically, I would have reached out to make a firm connection but it just never happened. I never got an email to make a UChicago account when I submitted my app so this was all kind of a shock yesterday haha. [/ul]
General Comments/Congratulations/Venting/Commiserations, etc:
I did the college thing all wrong this year. Just by circumstance of my school I guess, there aren’t many people I’m in contact with that applied to these high-caliber schools so I felt kind of alone the whole time and probably didn’t use my energy the right way in this application process. I was in love with one school (Columbia, rejected ED) and had trouble seeing beyond that. I had a mid-December crisis and completely overturned all of my application plans. So I ended up applying to plenty of safety schools. I’m not really passionate about any of them, so it would be great if this wait list thing came through! Not to mention I am now in love with UChi. I wish I could tell myself all of this a year ago. UChicago is the place I should have been looking at from the beginning.
Good luck to all of you brilliant people, rejected, accepted or otherwise. I know we’d have a great time in Chicago. You’ll all be great! The world is our oyster!
