[li] Why you think you were waitlisted: My essays[/li][/ul]General Comments: I didn’t start the application and essays until after the January 1st deadline. I was browsing websites and discovered that UChicago was an awesome school. I figured that I should apply and then I checked the deadline only to discover that I was a day too late. Then, because I listed them on my Common App, I received an email saying that if I was interested, I could still apply and they would take applications until January 7th. I had 3 basketball games that week, so my essays were rushed and not very good pieces of work.

Congratulations to all of you that got accepted! Maybe I’ll see you in Chicago (I’m waiting a decision from Northwestern)! :)

[] What other schools have you been accepted to/plan on going? im still waiting for other decisions
[/ul]
General Comments: I’M FREAKIN OUT!!!

Decision: Waitlisted

Objective:[ul]
[] SAT I (breakdown): 2350 (CR 780 | M 770 | W 800)
[] SAT II: Literature 800 | French 720
[] Unweighted GPA (out of 4.0): 3.3 W | UW GPA n/a
[] Rank (percentile if rank is unavailable): n/a (I’m probably somewhere in the top 40-50%, but my school doesn’t release this information. I’m by no means an academic superstar, in any case.)
[] Senior Year Course Load: everyone takes the same classes at my school; pretty rigorous curriculum
[] Major Awards (USAMO, Intel etc.): a semi-impressive essay award; perfect scores on some state exam thingie
[/ul]Subjective:[ul]
[] Extracurriculars (place leadership in parenthesis): lots of art-related activities, including designing various flyers, invitations, and posters for school; tried and failed to make an animated movie together with several other students; psychology club (meeting organizer); helped translate a psychology textbook into English for the benefit of the English-speaking psychology teachers at my school; school newspaper; creative writing club; ecology club; reluctant participation in the school musical
[] Job/Work Experience: n/a
[] Volunteer/Community service: helping the school librarians; volunteering at a community center of sorts
[] Summer Activities: n/a
[] Essays: Quite strange. My Why Chicago? essay is basically one long rant about the outdatedness of the concept of the life of the mind that rebukes itself halfway through, and my optional response is quite morbid (features mentions of rape, murder, mental disorders and other wholesome stuff); my main essay is about how hard it was for me to write my main essay. Yeah.
[] Teacher Recommendations: one from my favorite English teacher, who taught me for two years, and one from my history teacher in junior year (I got a B in her class), who tolerates me despite my underachieving ways; both of them know me well, so their recommendations must have had some substance at least.
[] Counselor Rec: haven’t read it, was probably something along the lines of “nice personality, shame about the grades”
[] Interview: It was a phone interview and the guy was really laid-back and friendly; I think he genuinely liked me because we’re now friends on Facebook. Which reminds me that I should probably message him to see how he’s doing and tell him I’ve been waitlisted.
[/ul]Other[ul]
[] Applied for Financial Aid?: yes, loads and loads of it
[] Intended Major: undecided, declared interest in philosophy, history, and art
[] State (if domestic applicant): n/a
[] Country (if international applicant): it’s in Eastern Europe
[] School Type: private
[] Gender: female
[] Income Bracket: low
[] Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): none. Many anti-hooks, though (see below).
[/ul]Reflection[ul]
[] Strengths: art portfolio, essays (probably? I have no other explanation), recommendations should have been good… Oh, and I suspect that most of the people applying to UChicago from my country are quite different from me, so that probably made me look more remarkable than I am.
[] Weaknesses: transcript (lol, ‘weakness’ is putting it mildly); lack of leadership positions; applied for financial aid as an international; almost failed chemistry in 10th grade (failed the second semester, graduated with a D, brought it up to a B- the next year… yeah, you get the picture); never got a single respectable grade in physics, biology, or math either, come to think of it; no upward trend at all; no accomplishments to speak of; applied for financial aid as an international (bears repeating); it’s painfully obvious I didn’t lift a finger in high school… I could go on and on.
[li] Why you think you were waitlisted: NO IDEA… At the risk of sounding immodest, though, I do think the fact that UChicago chose to waitlist me instead of rejecting me outright shows that it hasn’t sold its soul to US News quite yet, as some people seem to think. I mean, I have nothing going for me apart from intellectual curiosity… And a sincere desire to do better in college, but UChicago has no way of knowing that.[/li][/ul]General Comments:

I AM VERY VERY VERY EXCITED RIGHT NOW  Seriously, I was ABSOLUTELY CERTAIN they’d bin my application as soon as they saw my GPA and financial status. Being waitlisted actually comes as an IMMENSE surprise. Now I have to really work on that letter of interest… I mean, I still don’t think I’m getting in, but I’ll do everything in my power to make it happen.

Oh, and the fact that I was rejected by Sewanee and waitlisted at DePauw only serves to amplify my disbelief. The supplement must really be hella important to UChicago.

Edit: Ugh. Way to make me feel special, UChicago, waitlisting people left and right. Did they not have enough time to review every application, or have they decided to waitlist everyone, or is the data so far just really skewed? Hm.

Decision: Accepted

Objective:[ul]
[] SAT I: 2400 (one sitting)
[] ACT: 36 (one sitting)
[] SAT II: Math Level 2 – 800, Chemistry - 800

[] Rank: 1/425

[] Applied for Financial Aid?: Yes

[] Gender: Male
[/ul]Reflection[ul]
[] Strengths: Perfect test scores, rigorous curriculum (under the circumstances), GPA, rank, well-roundedness
[li] Weaknesses: Dearth of major awards, don’t attend feeder high school, no unusually compelling extracurricular activities, should have self-studied some AP tests[/li][/ul]General Comments: I wish all of the acceptees/waitlistees/rejectees the best of luck in their future endeavors. To the rejectees in particular and with the subjective nature of competitive college admissions in mind, I urge you to not see your admissions decision as an invalidation of your talents and accomplishments.

[] Job/Work Experience: Worked part time (20 hrs/wk) this past summer
[] Volunteer/Community service: None
[] Summer Activities: Nothing special, except last summer when I worked.
[] Essays: I think they were quite good (common app essay and Chicago supplement). I’m not sure they explicitly reflected that much about me, so that kind of concerned me. But apparently it worked out!
[] Teacher Recommendation: From my current Economics teacher, and AP Euro teacher from last year. I did not see either of them but I am sure they were very good.

[/ul]Reflection[ul]
[] Strengths: I think my essays were pretty good and my grades/test scores, while not exceptional for a school like Chicago, were a bit above the average.
[] Weaknesses: I have not done any community service/volunteering, and my extracurricular activities are not really that impressive (at least compared to what I usually see of people on here!)
[] Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: I get the sense that Chicago cares more about intellectual potential than anything else, and I think my essays were probably an important factor (although who knows!)
[] What other schools have you been accepted to/plan on going? Accepted to: Fordham, Northeastern, Tulane, and state schools. Waiting to hear from Columbia, Penn, and Cornell.
[/ul]
General Comments: Really happy! Only way I don’t go to Chicago is if I get accepted to Columbia, but even then I’m leaning towards Chicago. It just seems like the best place for people who really want to learn.

Common App Main: I a reflective piece on my experiences in dance and how it’s influenced me throughout my life. Probably an 8/10.
Extended Essay: “What would you dissolve and why?” I wrote about how I would dissolve metaphorical walls to encourage growth and open peoples’ minds. Very VERY cheesy, but well-written. 7/10
Why Chicago: I wrote about how much I enjoyed the atmosphere of Chicago. Pretty standard essay. 6/10
[] Teacher Recommendation: Didn’t read
[] Counselor Rec: I didn’t read it… but my counselor is an idiot and almost didn’t send my transcripts in. I wouldn’t assume her rec letter was very good.

[] Weaknesses: My extra-curriculars were acceptable, but not outstanding.
[] Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: I’m honestly surprised. I was expecting to be waitlisted considering the huge jump in apps this year.
[] What other schools have you been accepted to/plan on going?
[/ul]
University of Michigan (admitted, double legacy, expecting scholarships)
Tulane University (admitted with Presidential Scholarship)
University of Virginia (received a likely letter on Monday)
Yale University
Harvard University
UC Berkeley
Vanderbilt University
Columbia University
General Comments: I had a hell of a time getting my essays together, particularly the extensive one (I ended writing on “What would you dissolve and why?”). Overall, I’m pretty happy with my application and VERY happy that I was accepted. Though UChicago is my first choice, I doubt I’ll be able to attend due to my lack of offered financial aid.
