University of Chicago RIBS summer research in biology program

my junior sailed through AP bio, exhausting the bio curriculum at our public school. Now he wants more indepth exposure to lab work this summer to decide if this is a possible college major. there is no university lab facility close enough to us that he could volunteer someplace to get similar perspective.

He was admitted to the uchicago RIBS program which purports to be selective. It looks very interesting but also very $$$. however I don’t know how else he gets the experience he wants. For the cost, i would be happier if i knew he could get credit for it. (added bonus would be if it is favorable to his college application).

Has anyone sucessfully gotten college credit for this class (it actually counts as 6.6 semester hours) at another college?

Sadly, Uchicago says if a RIBS graduate enrolls at UofC undergrad, they do not receive credit for this class. they couldn’t tell me what other colleges would give credit.

I have to hand it to U of C – this is a brilliant ploy on their part.

Congrats on being admitted. My Junior was waitlisted and not yet admitted. Hope it is a great summer for your Junior

UChicago offers an on-campus regular college class in Bio for students between junior and senior year. It’s for credit, and counts toward a Bachelor’s degree. My son took it last summer (they live on campus for 3 weeks), and loved it. It’s not a research program, but the class does have an extensive lab component. He’s starting as a Bio major this fall at UChicago.

OP, RIBS is a strong program but it is not a full college course. I’m not surprised that UChicago would not credit it as a college course.
