University of Chicago vs. NYU

Which university do you think is harder, U of Chicago or NYU? And if anybody got into these particular universities, would you please tell me your GPA/test scores/extracurriculars, if you don't mind? That would be most helpful!
I appreciate your help!
TY

Do you mean harder to get into or harder once you're there?

Either way, I'd say Chicago. I believe the admit rates are close, but many more people apply to NYU. Chicago is self-selecting, so not too many people apply, but many are highly qualified. If you check out some basic stats, (got these from the cb website), 79% of students were in the top 10% of their class at U of C, whereas only 68% were at NYU. SATs are also much higher at U of C, though thats more indicative of the strength of applicants than of the SAT standards for admissions (U of C claims not to care much about test scores). NYU is a very popular school and much more likely to attract less qualified applicants, so if you are a strong candidate, it's easier to get in there than at Chicago, where most applicants are very strong. And once you're there, Chicago has a rep for being very tough and having grade deflation.

chicago...

sure it has a higher acceptance rate, but
u have to be crazy smart to get in, and you have to write liek shakeaspeare.

It's like a safety for IVY applicants most of the time.

thanks for all the replies!

NYU is a safety for Ivy applicants too, so that doesnt say much.

NYU has a lower acceptance rate, but it really isnt a top tier school, whereas UChicago is definitely a top school, i would say it offers better undergrad education than half the ivy league, and it has a very self selecting applicant pool. It is not only harder to get in, but much harder once youre there (i mean come on, NYU doesnt even have classes on fridays)

dawn, these past results threads may be of interest.

EA Chicago 2009
RD Chicago 2009
EA Chicago 2010
RD Chicago 2010

NYU RD 2009
NYU RD 2010

Uchicago is MUCH harder. It has a reputation for being tough on GPAs

And the acceptance rate for Chicago is higher simply because its applicants are self-selected...people don't apply unless they are pretty well-qualified and really want to go
NYU, however, is a dream school for thousands of people, esp. because it's in NYC...the low acceptance rate makes it look "selective" but that's due to the fact that so many people apply

is this uchicago vs nyu stern or just nyu in general?

Just like b4nnd20 said, UChicago has a high acceptance rate based on self-selectivity. The average high school senior won't want to go to the school that has the motto is "where fun comes to die." UChicago is infamous for an abysmally low rate of grade inflation compared to other top schools.

NYU is an excellent school as well, but its prime attraction is not academic (or at least to the same extent as Chicago's). People from all across the country and world want to experience life in the big apple. NYC is a completely different world with tons of amazing internships and job opportunities that no other university can offer its students.

Let's not get carried away. The average GPA at Chicago is a 3.3, on par with Harvey Mudd and Carleton and higher than Berkeley and Caltech. The average GPA for a freshman at Wake Forest is 2.8, which is fairly common at many public universities as well.

yeah but students at chicago are more comparable to those of the ivies, where gpas are generally higher

lots of students at chicago are smarter then many at ivy's

Their students are known for wanting to learn as much as physically possible

They are said to be some of the most intellectual students around

and
U have to be a much better student to get accepted to U of C

Admissions percentages mean nothing in this case, because basically everyone applies to NYU, but the UChicago applicant pool is self-selecting.

Curriculum-wise, UChicago is, according to many, the most challenging in the country. Harder than any of the Ivies, and a tough work load.

yeah
the kids that go to chicago just want to soak in as much knowledge as they can
and the ywork their butts off doing so

OP:

You know, if you're choosing between these two schools, you may want more information than this. Chicago is very, very specific about the skills it wants its grads to have and there is a rigorous core curriculum. So, if this is just curiousity, that's perfectly OK, but if you're looking for data to help make a decision, you'll want to look into the culture of the two schools very carefully.

OP probably thought that s/he wants to be in a big city and would like Chicago or NYC. UChicago and NYU are both top universities in big cities with acceptance rates and average SAT scores that make them seem easier to get into than Columbia and NU. UChicago and NYU are so different once you get there that if you really love one, it will be hard to adjust to the other. I would suggest the OP looks at USC in LA and BC in Boston if s/he likes a more NYU atmosphere. I really do not know an urban equivilent for UC, but Swarthmore may work.

Have NYU students ever built a nuclear reactor for a scavenger hunt? 'Nuff said.

So basically, U of Chicago is a lot more rigorous in their academics. And they actually have a physical campus, even if it's not huge. Way better in my book. (I'm biased, it's one of my top choices)

University of Chicago is one of the best and most rigorous schools in nation, period.

It is, however, not for everyone, even for those qualified to be admitted and do the work. I attended one of the best surburban high schools in Chicago and can't recall anyone matriculating at Chicago, although we all knew of its reputation (it has only become better since then).

But for those willing to indulge in its quirky, academically intense culture, there is no finer education. And while NYU is a fine school, it is just not the same experience as a University of Chicago.

warbler, you might want to do a bit of research on the origin of your oft quoted "average GPA" at U. Chicago of 3.3. It stems from an academic paper no longer available and of questionable provenance.

The figure may or may not be true. U. Chicago itself has never released such data. Many public universities do publish such data, so to compare an "internet legend" number to publicly available numbers is not reasonable, IMHO.
