university of chicago

I'm no one special, but I've got a decent record i think. I really want to go to university of chicago, but im also considering uc berkeley and uc san diego. I don't really want to go to stanford, but I feel I should apply anyway because I have 6 alumi in my family ( i hear thats big over there). so here it goes, what are my chances at these 4 schools?

I'm a california resident, and I'll graduate in 2007.

GPA (weighted): 4.3
GPA (unweighted): 4.0
Class Rank: 1 or 2 (not sure atm) out of about 500

By the end of senior year, I will have taken every AP class that my school offers (if things work out properly, I will have all AP classes next year).

SAT : 2210 (780-writing, 710-critical reading, 720-math)
SAT II's: Biology-770 US History-790
AP's: Sophmore: World History-3 Junior: US History-5, Biology-5, Computer Science A-5, English Language-5

Extracirriculars, etc. :
going on 4 years of varsity cross country
Scholar Athlete award - 2 years
2 years of academic decathlon
Golden Buffalo Award - English (means i was the top student in the sophmore class as selected by the english department)
HOBY ambassador for my school
various leadership camps
Volunteer tutor - 1 year (one hour twice a week)
private tutoring business - 6 months
volunteer at local ymca - in progress, 6 hours a week during the summer
taking a chemistry class at community college this summer - expect an A

There are some other things, but they are pretty insignificant.

letters of recomendation will be fairly strong, essays should be strong...

thanks :-)

i think you've got a great shot at uchicago... but as always... essays are huge

I don't do UC chances, so can't help you on these.

Stanford was not tremendously predictable this year, even for valid candidates. I think the alumni connection would help - but you should'nt be applying anywhere you don't want to attend. It's your college experience - not somebody else's.

You certainly have the academic qualifications for UChicago. Now, you need to complete your uncommon essays! If you look on the Chicago thread, there is some interesting discussion going on there. The prompts for this year will be up in mid-July.

You can't apply to UC's until you take SAT Math Level 2.

i was under that impression as well and had planned to take math 2 in the fall. However, after perusing the university of california website, I found that one only had to take two SAT II subject tests in two different areas. I know that previously they required math, writing, and something else, but I'm assuming that changed. Are you positive that it hasnt?

I'm also looking at UC and we have pretty similar qualifications so I'll just tell you what everyone told me. FOCUS ON THE ESSAYS!!!!! It'll either make you or break you.

essayssss i live in northern california too

You sound like a great candidate for Chicago. You sound like a great candidate for the UCs, but I know that their admissions can be strange. Stanford- they seem to attract the top score and top EC applicants, but with the alumni legacies, you could make it. If you don't like Stanford, why not pick a couple more Chicago-like schools. Four is a low number of applications these days.
