I see both sides to the argument, I just visited UMD-CP and the campus is really nice but the surrounding area is not so nice. The bars and clubs nearby are great. The Economics department is underfunded I hear. Does anyone know if UCONN has any good clubs or bars around encase I wanted to get away from just the house parties?

Is UMD really worth the sacrifice for a top ranked business program at UCONN?

I guess my first question is: why aren’t you in the Business School in Maryland versus Econ? That’s a big difference because Econ is in Maryland’s College of Behavioral Sciences. The girl next door started as a Journalism Major and was not able to transfer over to the Business School until her Junior year forcing her into a five year plan for her degree. Since you are already into UCONN’s Business School (congrats) this is a big advantage for someone wanting to be in business.

Certainly, Maryland being connected by metro to D.C. is a terrific advantage as Storrs is quite self-contained. But I don’t see being situated near a bunch of auto shops along Rt. 1 a huge plus for Maryland either. Storrs has a new and terrific building housing its B-school along with over a Billion dollars worth of new infrastructure. Maryland has put money into their campus too but I can’t speak to the B-School or Behavioral Science facilities.

My D is a Class of '07 from UCONN & lives in Boston. Just by being a UCONN alum, it has opened so many doors for her, both socially & professionally. While it is in the middle of nowhere, she never complained of lack of things to do. There was always something going on & when she did not have a car there, friends were always inviting her to go shopping etc. There is always student transportation to the football games via bus.

I view UCONN as self-sufficient with a great new Student Union building, grocery stores near by, a bank at the book store, medical facilities, etc. a Starbucks, the Dairy Bar, (they make their own ice cream) a couple of bars (Ted’s & Husky’s) & off campus apartment complexes surrounding the campus area. As I recall you can live on campus for 6 semesters. I always found the UCONN employees to be very helpful and I mean everybody-even the maintenance people in the dormitories. People were always so friendly & outgoing!

About the only negative thing D ever said was that sometimes when you are walking to class, you can smell the cow manure, depending on what part of campus you were on!

Visited UMD last year with my D, who was accepted there. She hated it. The campus is just blah, there is one small strip of stores/restaurants nearby, and oddly, the campus seemed extremely quiet and boring. We didn’t even finish the formal tour. BUT Dc is nearby which is kind of nice. The surrounding area is pretty skanky.
