@AmyBeth68 thanks for the info! Do you have any other tidbits of knowledge about Delaware that you think would benefit all of us?
@partyprincess you are very welcome! I’m happy to help. My husband was an engineering major at UD so I happent to have a little insight into that area as well. One of my best friends’ sons attends UD now and is NOT in a frat but is having a great time and doing very well as a business major. I was just there for alumni weekend and I can say that the campus is being continually updated and the dorms are in good shape based on the tour we took with my daughter. The Deer Park has the best nachos by the way…but avoid it late at night on the weekends if you want to keep your shoes clean (always sticky floors), a place that used to be the biggest bar on Main Street “The Stone Balloon” is now a really nice gastro-pub that you should have your parents take you to for a nice dinner if you end up attending. Wonderland Records is the real deal if you’re into hard to find vinyl…I could spend hours in there and it’s been around since the 70s…also a great place to find retro stickers, buttons etc. UDairy Creamery really does have some of the best ice cream ANYWHERE…worth the long lines for sure! The Ice Rink at UD is home to many olympic skaters, it’s fun to free skate there even if you aren’t an olympic athlete but it’s great to watch ice hockey games or sneak a peak at olympic caliber skaters. My favorite dorms, actually, are the older ones on South Central Green…Newcastle, Warner, Kent etc. They are VERY old no bells and whistles but they are so charming plus they are in my favorite location on all of campus. If AC is important, I think you should stay away, but if you want the old large high ceiling dorms these are my all time faves. And are usually fairly quiet for studying :).
@AmyBeth68 What engineering major was your husband? Also were the class sizes a problem for you? I’m in AP physics C with 8 total students and AP physics 2 with 21 total students with the same teacher and I can tell I really benefit from the smaller class size. It gives me a personal feeling with the teacher in AP physics C but sometimes I get distracted in AP Physics 2. This is why I’m considering Widener University because of the smaller “feel” to it. Any thoughts?
@partyprincess My husband was a Mechanical Engineering major and went on to get his masters from Rensselaer. As per UD class size, the main sections of your first year Physics, Calc, Chem etc classes might be larger than you are used to but there will be smaller labs and study groups that will help you if the larger class dynamic is a bit distracting. But I think that is definitely something you should consider when making your final decision. Have you looked at some of the other smaller engineering colleges? Worcester Poly is a great school as is RPI and RIT…I think all 3 will have smaller courses than the large state universities and should offer pretty significant merit for someone with your high stats. I’m not discouraging you from UD because I know as you move forward into your Civil Engineering courses the classes will get much smaller; but it’s definitely something to consider. Also make sure you look into the Women in Engineering groups at any school, it will be good a resource and group to connect with as you move forward.
@AmyBeth68 Can you send me a personal message? I’m not sure how to do it haha.
@partyprincess I sent you a personal message on here…it should appear at the top of your page as a separate notifiation
My son’s Major disappeared from the portal as well. The curiosity is palpable!
My major has not disappeared. I’m interested in the Education program, does anyone know anything about it? Also, is it hard to get into a sorority?
My daughter finally checked her portal tonight…her major also disappeared. Not sure what or if it means anything, but curious for sure :).
For those whose majors disappeared… would you mind posting when you got the email that the application is complete? DD’s major is still there; the portal said her applicat
@gcnorth my dd got application complete email on October 18.
Ion was complete 10/24 and she got the email confirming it was complete 10/31. Good luck to everyone!
@gcnorth My son got the email on 10/18 and his friend did too.
My daughter’s application was submitted on 9/19, and complete as indicated on the status page on 9/25. We received the email indicating it was complete on 10/18. We spoke with an admissions counselor at a college fair and they indicated counselors just got their first batch of applications last week. The applications are read by two counselors.
We can’t wait to hear!!!
Great info @Marissa110, seems we shouldn’t be seeing acceptances all that soon if they just started reviewing. It’s hard to be patient but thanks for the update!
My daughter applied way back in mid- August because UDel is definitely her first choice. She is interested in Early Childhood Ed. She got an email on Oct 18th that her application was complete (teacher rec took forever!!). I obsessively check the portal a million times a day (bc my daughter is too nervous to check) —her major is still listed as of today.
Stats:
GPA: 3.5 W all classes (3.3 W core classes)
SAT: 1380
ACT: 32
Worried about her GPA not being as strong as her test scores - does anyone know if they look at the overall GPA (all classes) or just core GPA?? Also wondering if Education is a competitive major to apply to…
@mprit4. I don’t know a whole lot other than what I have learned on the internet but I think her test scores are very strong and her grades seem within the acceptable range.
This whole major listed/not listed is strange indeed. ( As is the have to check the portal to find out if there is a decision. In this day and age how hard could it be to send an email advising of status change). Obviously the lack of major listing could mean absolutely nothing. At this point I would I not take anythingfrom it.
My only wild/uneducated guess would be that the ones that are currently being reviewed have the majors removed. But who the heck knows.
I hope your daughter gets in.
One other thing I would note is that my DD also applied to UVA and on its CC forum an admission officer regularly posts answers to the types of questions we have been raising here as well as providing insight into the admissions process for both students and parents. If you are interested take a look at uva forum.
It would seem like it would serve every school well to have similar type person following the forum for their school, if for nothing else, to limit the amount of phone calls to the admissions office.
I submitted my app 10/7, everything was in the portal 10/19 and still haven’t gotten an email…
It is very comforting to know that I am not alone in the quest to figure out this whole college application process even though we all know there is no exact science and things are subject to change from year to year. These groups are great to fill the void of waiting, and analyzing, and hoping, and more waiting… I wish everyone good luck in getting into the school of their choice, keep the posts coming (especially the acceptances!)
