Thanks. I just read through the part related to the Benacquisto Scholarship in the draft bill. Exactly as you explained, it may not be full ride anymore depending on the budget each year, and it will not be available for NMF from OOS from 2022. The Florida schools won’t be attractive for OOS NMF then.
(in-state) Accepted for Summer B 2021!
3.9 UW / 5.1 W
10 APs & a lot of dual enrollment credits
1280 SAT (did not have opportunity to test again)
Lots of ECs (National Honor Society, National Science Honor Society, National Social Studies Honor Society, Mu Alpha Theta, Math Club, Environmental Club, LGBT+ Club, Key Club, Marching Band)
UF actually does consider state residency in the admissions review, at least according to their Common Data Set. Although I don’t think the IS vs OOS acceptance rates have quite the drastic difference that schools like UVA and UNC have, but I could be wrong.
Also, just a thoery, but I’m guessing that OOS students are more likely to be on threads like this, as they may not know anyone else applying to UF. It would definitely be interesting to see the IS vs OOS breakdown/acceptance rates.
So sorry for your D - she seems like a great applicant who I’m sure will have tons of other amazing options!
In 2019, the rate for OOS is 41% vs 45% in state. There is a category called ‘undetermined’ which accounts for around one fourth of the total applications. The undetermined has only 15% acceptance rate.
I was curious also about scholarships since they have 3 tiers. The daughter of a close friend (in State) is a freshman at UF and received both the Benaquisto for being National Merit finalist and 10000 yr presidential scholarship. She is basically getting paid to attend UF (was also accepted at Cornell).
You can search for specific classes in specific semesters. It will show each Section of the Class, when it meets, how it is delivered. For example, here is CHM2045, the first in the two-part series of General Chemistry. This section (28286) is delivered “Primarily Classroom/Traditional”, meets Monday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday.
If she is a NMF, they will give her $500 a year to make her a NMS so she can qualify for Benacquisto. Do not know if that is the presidential or not, but you probably won’t know about that one until she selects UF as 1st choice.
From Q&A
I’m a National Merit® Finalist. Am I eligible for a scholarship?
UF offers $500 annual scholarship to National Merit® Finalists that indicate UF as their first-choice institution with the National Merit® Corporation. Florida high school graduates who receive a UF-sponsored National Merit® Scholarship are eligible to receive the Benacquisto Scholarship from the Florida Department of Education. Benacquisto Scholars will receive an award equal to the cost of attendance at UF minus the sum of Bright Futures and the National Merit® award.
My D told me this morning “no one was rejected” this year. Anyone that applied to Innovation got in. She is so upset, she worked so hard, and now feels like why did she stress herself out.
Does anyone else have a kid who feels this way? Can someone explain to me the difference between the UF campus, PACE, and Innovation?
Not sure what UF is doing. Are they trying to pack the school because of prepaid?
@erc052970
I suggest you spend some time looking at the UF Admissions website. They explain the different programs.
Also, you just have to read through these 900+ posts on this thread to see that not everyone was accepted.
I am not an expert but from what I have read UF Is regular UF with a summer or fall start. PACE is alternative (SFCC or online) for at least the first year and then into UF (not sure of the exact details) and Innovation is Spring and Summer at UF but no Fall. Again, that is what I have heard from our counselor.
It is also not true that nobody was denied. I know several students who were actually highly qualified and denied with no option of Pace or Innovation
I wonder if all these ‘alternatives’ like pace or innovation are counted as rejected. So maybe they say 40% accepted but it’s really higher. Florida State definitely does that.
