University of Florida: Getting admitted much, much harder this year

"On the eve of his 18th birthday, Jake Yap got an early present Saturday when he learned that he was accepted into the University of Florida.

Yap is a senior in the International Baccalaureate program at Eastside High School in Gainesville, boasts a 4.85 weighted grade-point average and holds leadership roles in multiple student clubs.

One might expect him to be a shoo-in for admission into UF, but he said that friends with similar credentials were denied....

Last week, UF posted admission decisions online for nearly 27,000 high school students hoping to enroll at the university. Less than 40 percent, or about 10,000 students, were admitted to start as freshmen in the summer or fall terms.

In the past few years, UF has boosted standards to make it more difficult to gain admission. This year, a cut in the number of available spots and attention from the national football championship have made it even tougher.

"It's kind of a perfect storm, really," said UF spokesman Steve Orlando. "I would not want to hold out false hopes for anybody thinking their chances are going to get better anytime soon."

Hey NSM.

I’ve noticed the same thing this year. It isn’t just UF, it seems as though all colleges are upping their standards because of the current times. Competition is increasing always so I think the competition will only continue to grow.

I’m only a High School Junior, but I’ve been paying close attention to the admission rates lately and they are getting insane. >_>

What does everyone think about this? Neat topic.

This was expected to be the most competitive year ever in college admissions because there are more high school seniors than ever before. In fact, this is supposed to be teh watershed year for the number of high school seniors.

However, the horrendous economy has made the admission situation even worse than expected – at least when it comes to public institutions and the most generous private universities (which already have been the most competitive in the country). Consequently, public institutions are having huge budget cuts, and are having to reduce class size, so at a time in which demand is exceptionally high, spaces are being reduced.

I’ve noticed the same thing happening with UNC.

Tough times.

double post

Ironically, someone at my school who I would thought would have gotten in even in previous years did. His weighted GPA was far less than 4.85.

threads like these make me sad

This is what my counselors warned me about since junior year…so I applied 2 months after the Nov 1 deadline.

haha funny. My solution was to apply early to a college who is need blind and meets 100% need.
