University of Florida NMF Benefits?

I've been seeing a lot of conflicted info about what NMFs get at UF. Apparently there were reductions in 2011 and so there's a lot of outdated information + the UF site doesn't say anything useful

I was under the impression that out of state tuition is waived and there was a small additional stipend. Anyone know what the most current info is?

As recently as the 2012-2013 school year they still sponsored National Merit scholarships. That year they had 136 freshmen of whom they sponsored 116. I suppose that was when they gave $1000. It used to be more. You can see from their budgets that the annual money they spent on NMF scholarships dropped drastically between 2006 and 2012, from $6,000,000 to about half a million. Then all of a sudden there is nothing mentioned anywhere. People in Florida must know. Can’t find any news reports that they dropped out of the program, but for 2013-14, they are not listed in NMSC annual report as sponsor anymore. There are 20 NMS freshmen at UF this year, but they got their money somewhere else.

UF has greatly reduced its awards in recent years. at one time, it was $5k, now it seems much less.

how much do you want or need? are you instate? how much will your parents pay?

I’m out of state and only live with my dad. I don’t know how much exactly but I know I’ll need a substantial amount of financial aid, which is why I’ve been hoping NMF would be beneficial.

If you need a lot of aid, then the schools that offer $2000 a year or so for the status won’t be much help. ANd it seems UF doesn’t even give that much anymore. Look through the thread in this forum on NMF scholarships. Almost every school that offers large benefits for NMF is listed there, often with links, and the scholarship amount is detailed in the list. Bob is maintaining the list externally now as it’s too long for the new CC.

If you have Florida as a destination, UCF gives full-ride. If you are looking for a higher tier state school, Alabama has a great package. Not full-ride, except first year, but a large package. Texas A&M gives full tuition. These are just examples.

florida wont be affordable. It doesn’t give OOS aid other that the small amount of merit. You would be expected to pay most of the costs.

ask your dad how much he will pay each year. are you low income?

also, have your dad run the NPC on various schools website.

apply to alabama for its NMF scholarship.
