(..As a public university I read U of I Engineering is relatively easy to get into)

You should be in because of your high ACT and GPA but class rank might be a problem since you are not even in the top 20 % with that 3.8 UW GPA. Shows your school has high grade inflation. UIUC engineering is not easy to get into.

U of I is a really good school for engineering. I agree, your ACT is deffinatley in line with their selection of candidates for the program but as for class rank it is a bit low. However, your AP classes will really help and as long as your involved with activities and extracurriculars you should be fine. They like well rounded people but also look for the top scores. Good luck!

UIUC don’t give two shiites about class rank. Your ACT, GPA, and E.C.'s are most of what we look at, and while your GPA is definitely there, your ACT is borderline. I’d say it’s about a 40/60 tossup for you. 40% you get in, 60% that you don’t.

As an alumnus and with one child also an alum of UIUC, I am pretty sure that they DO look at class rank. If you look at the bottom of the link below, you can see the direct anti-correlation between test scores and class rank. The higher the class rank, the lower the threshold for ACT and SAT scores. Even if it is not a specific criterion, class rank is an excellent indicator of a student’s performance in high school and how much he/she took a challenging curriculum.

UIUC is a state university and has to serve all the high schools in Illinois. Clearly there are large variations in quality between inner city High Schools in Chicago and those in the suburbs, the class rank is a way of making sure that the best student from all High Schools can be admitted.

I would agree with that. Class ranks are important for applicants from disadvantaged areas. In my previous post, I was trying to make the point that if you’ve done well with your classes and have demonstrated in passion in your E.C.'s, UIUC won’t reject you just because a lot of other students from your high school have also done so. I suppose class rank can help you, but being middle of the road for your high school won’t hurt you if you come from a kick-asz high school.
