University of Illinois in Champagne

Hi, I am a high school freshman and I was wondering if anyone knew how hard it is to get into U of I. As of right now, I have mostly A’s in my classes with one B. Also, I am working to get my Eagle Scout. With this information and I know it’s way too early, but what would you think my chances of getting into U of I are?(assuming I get an average SAT score)

Don’t worry. It’s way to early to even think of this. Think of doing your best at high school, and start thinking if colleges between your Sophomore and Junior year.

It will depend on your major. CS & engineering are very competitive here. Bio programs are slightly competitive as well. Are you in-state or out of state?

I would also reiterate what MWolf said, you’re only a freshman. Do your best in classes and get involved, but don’t worry about college this early. Looking back on my high school years, I wish I would have spent a lot less time freaking out about applying to colleges. I’m a journalism major at Uiuc (college of media) so if you’re thinking about that and have any questions definitely reach out!

Certain majors at UIUC are 3x as competitive as the university as a whole. Computer science, engineering, business, and biology are more competitive than the published acceptance rate in general.

Just keep doing what you’re doing. Challenge yourself. Take the core classes in a high level that you can also do well in. There will be a place for you somewhere.

As stated… Can’t really chance you till like Junior year when you have a proven path of grades, activities and scores. But let’s rephrase your question. What can you do to be a competitive applicant to college. Any college…

Keep getting good grades. They all don’t have to be "A"s. Take rigorous classes and do well in them. Get involved with school. Join activities /clubs that you enjoy not what you think colleges want to see. Be involved in like 2 of those for 2-4 years. If your so inclined start a club, be a peer to peer tutor, volunteer for something that is meaningful to you. Have fun! Worry about how your football team will do this Friday and not college ??.
