I’m an incoming freshman for Fall 2015. I am attending merit weekend next weekend and need some advice on scheduling classes. Any suggestions on core classes/proffessors?
Advice:
Listen to the paperwork that was sent to you, and bring copies of the things that are stated. Become familiar with what your AP credit, CLEP credit, dual enrollment, etc., counts toward. Although you will have an advising session, depending on the number of students present, you might not have as much time to ask specifics as you would like. If you have an idea of your major, go online before next weekend and pull off the 4 year Curricular Map for your major and degree. Become familiar with the difference between the UK Core requirements and major and college requirements.
If it is like last year, you will have an opportunity to get your student ID. If you are set on going to UK, get this done early. The line gets longer as the day goes on. Have a government issued ID with you for this purpose.
If you are taking a foreign language placement exam, get this completed as early as possible.
As for professors, many core classes will not have this information available. Some classes will fill up faster than you anticipate. Have a backup plan ready. If you are taking CLEP or AP exams this year, your results will not be back before Merit Weekend. (You will not even have taken the test yet.) Realize that you will not be able to sign up for classes based on your confidence that you will do well on an exam. If you are now taking Calculus or another leveled type class, realize that you might need to make a schedule change later.
Enjoy yourself! The time is going to go by quicker than you anticipate.
