University of Maryland C/O 2020 Discussion

Hey guys, as we all wait in anticipation of February 1st when decisions will be released, anyone want to share any thoughts?

I am banking on getting into Maryland as it is pretty much my only safety school. How about you guys?

I’m anxious as well, waiting is the most painful part. Maryland is one of the least hardest schools that I applied to, but I’d still be happy to go there so I’m hoping it turns out well

I’m the oppisite from both of you. UMD is my first choice, given I am out of state, I am really nervous!!

UMD has been my dream school since I was like 7. Really hoping I get in but I really am not sure.

@md1998 Same!! I’ve wanted to go since I went to the Gymkana Summer Camp, when I was six.

Anyone know how much harder out of state is? Like is the gap between the OOS acceptance rate and the in-state acceptance rate as ridiculous as UNC’s?

@gq2016, I believe Maryland actually has a decent percent of OOS students…somewhere between 28-30% I think.

@maryversity Thanks for letting me know

How come so many state schools have such large in-state and OOS acceptance rate gaps? I would think they would want a decent amount of OOS students since they generally pay a lot more to go there…?

@maryversity you seem pretty knowledgable. When do you think decisions will come out?

Honestly think SoofDad’s theory of Feb 1st and his reasoning is on target.

If you didn’t see it, this is what he posted:

I think it’s safe to say that decisions will NOT be out on Monday. It’s possible that the impeding blizzard will force the school to be closed Monday also.

I personally think that decisions will be out Feb 1 for the following reason:

Last year, UMD did something different.

On the last Sunday of January 2015, a bunch of Admissions people and Testudo piled into an Official UMD Tour Bus and hand-delivered acceptances to 6 randomly selected local students. There were YouTube videos and it was written up in the Washington Post. They decided that they wanted to share in the excitement. This caused quite a stir here on CC with everyone wanting decisions right then. The rest of the decisions were released the next day at the usual time.

Here is a link to the Washington Post article last year

https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/grade-point/wp/2015/01/25/just-look-at-their-faces-a-bus-full-of-admissions-staff-and-a-turtle-mascot-surprises-applicants-with-good-news/

I think they are planning to do this again on Sunday Jan 31. and that is why they made the decision release date Feb 1 instead of Jan 31, the date from previous years.

This is just my opinion.

For all I know they may have been planning to repeat that this Sunday (Jan 24) but the weather put an end to that,

In any event, decisions will be out soon. Good Luck to All!!

One of my friends said she just checked her portal and she got in! I checked mine and there’s nothing there. Kinda confused

@ksween could you ask her for a photo of her decision?

@NameIsBlurryface - In a nutshell, the reason for the gap is that public, state universities receive funding from the state (read taxpayers living in the state) so they are financially obligated to their home state residents.

@litlhoward2468 yeah i’m asking now. she said it’s not letting her log back onto her portal so maybe there was a glitch or something???

@ksween i guess thats possible. what they said sounds a little far fetched tho but i could be wrong

At this point, it’s clear the decisions have definitively NOT been released today, and, understandably, you all are antsy…how about distracting yourselves by sharing some of the things you like about Maryland (in general or specific to your intended major)?

@litlhoward2468 yeah it does. kinda thinking maybe she saw the date of completion thing? idk hoepfully decisions come out soon!!!

@maryversity The fact that it snowed a ton and now everybody’s stuck at home isn’t helping the anxiety either lol

But I’m excited about the math department!

Yeah, I know… But awesome about the math department…so my son is an engineering student and I remember going to the info session and being surprised/impressed about Maryland’s ranking in math nationally! What level math are you taking this year?
