@Tertle - I don’t think it precludes merit/aid, but UMD, as a Public University, is not flush with cash for that.
Thanks, appreciate the info
Does turning in the housing and dining agreement automatically bind you to the school?
@ClassOf2020x No, but if you want your deposit back you have to remember to go back and cancel by the refund deadline.
@ClassOf2020x - Just to clarify, the Housing and Dining form does not require a deposit.
Sorry @SoofDad, I was misremembering from two years ago! Is there a financial penalty for forgetting to cancel?
@crowlady - Not that I’m aware of, although 2 years ago, my D enrolled, so it wasn’t a concern for us. I don’t think they can imposed a penalty for something that did not require a deposit. I suspect there may be a financial penalty with the enrollment deposit.
Actually, I found a page for last year – you are liable for part of the housing cost if you don’t cancel by certain dates:
By July 1, 2015 No release fees
July 2 -15, 2015 ½ of 1 week’s housing/facility cost
July 16 - 29, 2015 1 week’s housing/facility cost
July 30 – August 12, 2015 1-½ weeks’ housing/facility cost
After August 12, 2015 and prior to check-in 2 weeks’ housing/facility cost
My S14 did not end up enrolling so I had to cancel. Not sure yet about S16.
I looked online and it said that I should not turn in the housing/dining application if I do not expect to pay for them. That gave me the impression to not turn it in unless I’m sure to commit there. Does turning it in early have any advantage in the process or no? @crowlady @SoofDad
@crowlady @ClassOf2020x - I guess the confusion was on my part, I assumed that anyone who did not enroll by May 1 would notify UMD of their decision not to attend
I think that dorm/room assignments are made based on the order in which the forms are received, but I’m not sure of that. LLCs determine many dorm assignments, but not the rooms…
Yes, I think the recommendation is to get your housing form in early so that you can get a good assignment. If you do not enroll I believe you have to separately cancel the housing – it isn’t automatically withdrawn. I’m sure they’d prefer not to have people frivolously turn the form in, but if you are strongly leaning towards UMD . . .
I haven’t heard back from any other schools yet so I’m hesitant to put in a form. I am already assigned to the Cambridge Community and given that I was accepted into Scholars, I am guaranteed housing. So I am not too worried, but I would still prefer to have a nicer dorm haha
when do we receive the letter of acceptance in the mail?
State schools are required to take 75% in state because the residents pay taxes to go to their state schools. UMCP said they take 15% OOS.
@GardenBeeGirl serious?!! they only take that many oos students…? is it the same way for other schools too?
It depends on the school–some are 50% OOS, others limit it to 15%.
According to their website, UMD has 23% out-of-state students https://www.admissions.umd.edu/about/JustTheFacts.php
When can you register for housing? Is there a reason to do it early–are housing assignments done on a first come, first served priority? My daughter was accepted for Spring and plans to enroll in Freshman Connection for fall, but I don’t think enrollment is open until March 2. Can she register for housing now?
The advisors at Freshman Connection (the Extended Studies dept) are amazingly helpful. My suggestion is to make an appointment either by phone or in person. They can answer all your questions, expedite your course sign-ups, and reassure you about the program, We spoke to both Alysa and Anne and they were both super nice and helpful
Thank you, rocklandmom. I will call on Monday!
