I’m in-state, optimistic for honors. Anyone else? Prior applicants/current students are welcome too!

Official UMD Class of 2020 Decisions from @MrIvyLeague
This thread is old, but hello! Fellow in-state as well. Hopeful for Scholars, doubtful about Honors (maybe if my test scores get better).
We visited a few weeks ago just to kill time after landing at the airport and waiting for my sons Johns Hopkins tour. Turns out, he hated Johns Hopkins and loved University of Maryland!!! It is his number one choice right now. I’m not sure the difference between honors and scholars, but he has a 35 ACT, is 5/549 students so I’m hopeful he will get in and get some merit money to make it work for our family (OOS in Illinois)
The quote below is copied from this link on the UMD Honors College website:

Note that test scores and GPA are not the only criteria used for the Honors College admission decision. Also, students must apply by the Priority deadline to be considered for admission into the Honors College, or Scholars Program.
“Invitations to the Honors College are extended to new first-year students who demonstrate exceptional academic ability and promise. Students’ applications are carefully evaluated on the basis of academic achievement in high school, rigor of high school program, application essays, letters of recommendation, participation in extracurricular activities (including work and home responsibilities), and standardized test scores. There are no numerical thresholds (such as a minimum SAT/ACT or GPA) to be considered for Honors College admission although most successful applicants are among the most academically motivated and talented students in our pool by these measures. The Honors College welcomes a nationally and internationally diverse group of students each year. There is no quota for in-state versus out-of-state students.”
Does anyone know if UMD is going to take old SAT scores for this cycle?
@pandaholic2 - I believe that UMD will take the old SAT scores based on this statement from their application web page.
- Official standardized test scores Scores should be sent directly to the Office of Undergraduate Admissions at the address below by the test administrator. We use the highest subscores from the SAT and ACT in our review of your application. We will accept scores from the redesigned SAT, first administered in March 2016, with or without essay scores. View College Board’s Concordance Tools to see how scores from the redesigned SAT compare to those on the old SAT.
@emptyMT Re your question on the"decision" thread in which you asked, “Do you know if they take many OOS students? How about scholarships? I visited and really like it for aerospace which my state does not have.”
Yes, Maryland does take a fair number of OOS students, relatively speaking, for a public, state university. I can’t tell you exact numbers but I seem to recall somewhere in the range of 20% -ish.
Scholarships based on merit are only possible for those that apply by the November 1 priority deadline.
Aerospace engineering at Maryland is outstanding. The neutral buoyancy tank on campus brings a whole different dimension to the education that Maryland offers and Nasa’s Goddard Space Center is about 10 minutes away from campus, in Greenbelt, MD.
@Math557 Re your question on the"decision" thread in which you asked, “Do the recs and transcript have to be in my Nov 1 too to be considered a priority applicant?”
The answer is yes. The only exceptions I know of are extenuating circumstances such as the huge power outage caused by a major storm in the Northeast a few years back. Only those directly affected by that situation were given accommodation in regard to the deadline. They do accept electronic submissions from the schools through accepted channels, so there should be no reason to not meet that deadline. Check with your guidance department to verify/follow up to make sure those things were sent already, and if not, that they go out this week.
Thanks maryversity, my application is just about ready to submit! I really liked the aero department, and the proximity to DC is a huge, huge thing to me. I’m actually pretty interested in policy, lol I’ll probably end up staying in MD for like the next ten years just going to school!
another reason why I like UMD is we get into our majors right away, no waiting around for a year to see if we make the cut. As an OOS student that is really important, I don’t want to go somewhere only to not get into my major the second or third year, I would be really, really disappointed.
Hi, would you be able to answer a question for me?
I don’t think I have an admission representative when I check on here:
https://www.admissions.umd.edu/explore/representative.php
This is weird becuase I live in Maryland and in a pretty big county. Would you happen to know if this is a mistake?
I don’t have one, either, (but I live in another state) so I just contacted the main office and they were great.
@deeeznuts What county? If you notice, one of the reps is assigned “Southern Maryland” so I would think that would encompass a lot of areas without specifically naming individual counties…
I am OOS and honestly never had any contact with any admission rep that was assigned to my state. The only interactions I had with admissions reps were when I went to the info sessions on campus with my kids. I specifically remember taking note of Michael Robinson as the main speaker at the first session I attended because he was so friendly and informative. There was at least one or possibly two other reps at the general info session, but I honestly don’t remember them.
All the reps handle multiple states, but I really doubt you are limited to contacting the rep that is assigned to your geographic area - as emptyMT said, just call the school and I’m sure they would be happy to help.
Do they have a preference for out of state students?
Any chance of Priority applicants hearing before February 1?
According to the Maryland thread from last year (High school class of 2016), the first time applicants heard back was Jan 29
Be patient @STEM2017. :))
Looks like last year they released on the Friday before February 1st. This year that would be Friday, January 27th, so that’s a possibility.
