University of Maryland-College Park Class of 2021 Discussion

This year competition must be very hipgh. Got accepted into scholars but not honors.
Unweight gpa 4.0,
weighted: 4.6.
Lot of Ecs, GT/AP classes. SAT:1410
Great recommendation letter, w good essay.

Honestly what’s the point of spring, the freshman connection plan basically is admission, thank you UMD! Glad they are one of the few schools that allow this program.

Can anyone offer info on how hard it would be to transfer into engineering from Letters and Sciences?

@artetc me neither :frowning:

How good is it to get into FIRE? I knew it’d be tough getting honors in Compsci, cuz ya UMD’s ranked 15th nationally there

FIRE appears to be geared toward students who have an aptitude or interest in research. From what I’ve read it’s a hands on, research-intensive 4 semester program that gives undergrads a graduate-level research experience. How good is it to get into FIRE? Depends on your goals! My son was offered FIRE, we were unaware of it, but he is excited. He will be a physics major and is interested in research. This will let him know if it’s the right choice. If it is, FIRE will give him a leg up, it seems, with some resume-building research work - possibly even under grad publication.

got in spring admission!!! 3.66UW, 4.03W, 1300 new SAT

also are spring admitted students still considered for merit scholarships? (considering the fact i applied before nov 1)

@abattey788 I received an email asking me to check my portal for my decision!

“The Admission Committee has carefully reviewed your application and a decision is now available.” etc etc

@YoohooAddict I believe FIRE is indeed selective and, honestly, all research is worthwhile. If you haven’t seen it already, here is the link to check it out http://www.fire.umd.edu

Well, Deferred here. At least it’s not an outright rejection, but I hate to wait 2 more months for an actual decision. The wait had already been excruciating.
Can’t say I’m surprised they want to see my Senior year grades though, due to:
3.13 UW GPA
3.71 W GPA
But I was hoping I would just slide right in. Damn you Freshman Year (;-:wink:
I guess I’ll ask this now

Sat - 1470
In state student
3.75 UW GPA and 4.25 W GPA my first semester of senior year (As has been the trend since Freshman year)
Good essay and Great recommendations (thinking about getting another one just for a little extra since I got deferred)

Do you guys think I have a good chance for my deferred decision?

@abattey788 I received an email afterward

@AHRed13 I honestly think you have a good chance adding in your senior year stats. I wish you the best of luck!!

@maryversity But do you know how selective? Like which is better, getting into honors, scholars, or FIRE? or is FIRE not a comparable program?

@YoohooAddict last year UMD took 450 freshmen into the FIRE program. Looking to take 500 this year.

@NewHokieMom OMG that makes it so selective wow… I can’t believe I got selected for it!

@NewHokieMom How many students applied this year tho? So I just want to know the ratio: 500/total # of applicants to see how selective it is lol

@YoohooAddict ~33000

@YoohooAddict. If you’re asking how many applied to FIRE the selection process seems similar to honors and scholars. You are evaluated as an EA applicant and selected. So the pool is all EA applicants. Those not extended an invitation can apply but won’t be evaluated until May when those who were invited accept. There is limited participation. You can’t be Honors and FIRE.

Ah that makes sense now. Thanks for the explanation @NewHokieMom
