University of Maryland-College Park Class of 2021 Discussion

@itsgettingreal17 and @just_nag nag If you look on UMD’s website, it states that you cannot be in FIRE if you are in Honors or Scholars.

Actually, this is what it says:

FIRE is for students not already in the UMD Honors College (with the exception of those in University Honors who can and should apply).
FIRE is for students not already in College Park Scholars or other living-learning programs like CIVICUS, Global Communities and the Carillon Communities.

My D will choose University Honors as her honors LLP, so I guess she can apply. Thanks!

Does anyone know if you can send in first semester grades in order to be reconsidered for admission to an LEP that you didn’t get into?

@itsgettingreal17 Based on that she sure can. I didnt realize she was in Univ Honors. Good that you checked.

Are we gonna receive an acceptance letter in the mail as well?

@RA2015 - Yes, you will

Anyone got addnitted to Global Communities program? Any thoughts/information about this program? Thanks!

@curiouscali100 I presume it was my GPA. I did very poorly my freshman year, but got straight A’s junior year with three AP’s and all honors, but a rising trend only helps you so much. I’ve been accepted into Texas A&M Engineering, UT Knoxville, WVU, Miami University, and Marietta College. I was deferred from Ohio State which was my number one.

^ and this year I am taking AP Chem, AP Calc BC, AP Lit, AP HuGe, and Honors engineering

@yourstrulyjune Yes you have to complete your preference form for scholars by February 17th regardless of whether or not you have already accepted your invitation to attend UMD in the Fall.

The scholars program has 12 thematic programs and you must select 3 of them on your preference form.
12 Programs of UMD Scholars
Arts
Business, Society and the Economy
Environment, Technology and Economy
Global Public Health
International Studies
Justice and Legal Thought
Life Sciences
Media, Self and Society
Public Leadership
Science, Discovery and the Universe
Science and Global Change
Science, Technology and Society

From the scholars website:
Program Preference Form Deadline
February 17, 2017 at 5:00 p.m. EST
Complete the Program Preference From

Notifications will be made in Early March to advise which Scholars Program you have been accepted to.

If you wait until after February 17th, one of your top programs might be full and then you would have to be waitlisted or be placed in a program that you aren’t as interested in.

what is the difference between honors and scholars programs?

Is the acceptance letter that we are going to get in the mail just the letter we got via online? Or is there an information packet along with it? Does anyone know?

is anyone still waiting for a priority applicant answer? My S has still not heard… could they stile offering acceptances thru tomorrow?

@mom3boyz I am pretty sure all of the priority applicants should have heard back on Friday. I would call the admissions office today to find out what happened

@mom3boys There are many students above in the same situation and also at our HS.

Will international students get a package as well?

@mom3boys & @acs116 My 2 cents…since they said all priority applicants will hear by Feb 1, there is a chance that some may hear today.

@mom3boys I’m still waiting as well!

@mom3boys @mer2017 I spoke with the admissions office this morning, they are still sending out admissions decisions, could be as late as Friday. It is not indicative of anything, so still no news is simply no news.

Denied outright. UMD went down to 2nd place anyway after my acceptances and scholarships at other universities in the last few months and had already put a deposit down on one of them but I didn’t expect this. - kind of stunned me. I am in-state, decent (but not excellent) stats, great EC’s and Superior Alumni and teacher recommendations. I thought that at worst I would get a Spring admittance. I can see that UMD is really stepping up their academic entrance prestige.

Congrats to all who became Terps!

As for me, now I am a solid Baylor Bear. Texas here I come! Sic 'Em!
