So this is very interesting. We are in-state, 20 min from campus. DD got her red envelope with the stickers yesterday, 12 days after learning of her acceptance to the university and honors college. But, nothing from the honors college. So I guess that will be in some other day’s mail…
There is no application for freshmen, (although I believe if you meet the criteria you can apply for it in later years?) For freshmen, the school looks at the application as a whole and invites individuals to honors, scholars, FIRE, etc. with their acceptance.
Fwiw, it’s not that the postal system is “messed up” as much as it is that bulk mailings do work differently…separate letters from individual programs like LLP’s are sent about a week after the main letter of admission.
I know we get letters from programs we got invited to like FIRE and Honors and whatnot, but will we also get a letter from our LEP’s as well? Or from the college of our major?
@maryversity I have a question. If I commute to UMD from my own home instead of living in the dorms, how much should I expect my budget to be for all 4 years (or per year if you want) at UMD?
@YoohooAddict I am not sure how I can answer that question…? You need to consider the distance you personally are traveling, cost of gas, any tolls?, parking pass, cost of books (will you buy new or used or rent or share the cost with a friend in class and split the cost), tuition, whether or not you plan on packing lunch or buying it on campus…and if you want to get nit picky, consider the cost of car insurance as well if it is something you would normally drop if you were living on campus…
Daughter was accepted to honors college and submitted her form for University Honors as her preference but just received an email today that she needs to submit her Scholars Preference Form. Confused as to why she received this email if she is in Honors College. I thought you get accepted into one or the other. Did anyone else in honors college also get this email?
@maryversity Yeah I thought of that too. Which brings me to one last question. I’m in dire need of a new laptop (I’m only using the one my school allowed us to borrow). What type of laptop would you recommend based on your children’s experience? I’m interested in getting a Macbook Air.
@abrxll A lot depends on your major… my kids have MacBooks, each purchased through their respective school store to get the extended warranty that provides a loaner in case of the need for repair. https://it.umd.edu/techstore/index.html
@2girls2015 You are correct - you do not get invited to both Honors and Scholars as an incoming freshman, so I would assume the recent email about scholars preference was sent to you in error…
@maryversity Hello! I was wondering what the process is to appeal for Honors. Who do you contact? Do you need specific documentation? What is the chance that it will actually be appealed?
My daughter got that email about Scholars preference as well, and she is in the Honors College. She replied to the email saying as such. Received a response apologizing, and to disregard the email.
