University of Maryland-College Park Class of 2021 Discussion

Definitely rumor

how do you know it is a rumor?

@collegecrazyperson A brand new user pops in and says they heard decisions are coming out at 5:30 today. Believe @miaemily10 if you want but I will also tell you…it’s a rumor. T R O L L S like to pop on and gets kids crazed about decisions.

Sadly, too many kids fall for it.

The first rule of College Confidential is never believe post number 1 from ANYONE.

Posts like the one from @miaemily10 are typical when decision time starts to get close. Stay patient.

I emailed my UMD representative and here’s the reply

Decisions are scheduled to go out on January 27th at 4:45 pm. They will go out in two waves, so it should be around that time students receive the email letting them know that their decisions are available.

This years applicant pool was extremely competitive as we saw an increase of about 3,000 applications for the priority deadline this year.

Hope that answers any questions about when or how they’ll release decisions.

@Kawaiiii Thanks for the update. Dang, chances are lower this year then. Oh well, let’s hope for the best for everyone. Gl everyone!!!

I think it’d be easier for all of us to converse like in a groupchat, perhaps on GroupMe. What do you guys think?

Fwiw, my money is on the 30th…two years ago, they had a big local event on a Sunday when Testudo went to a few randomly selected (local) homes to notify the first students of their admission status, kind of like being a sweepstakes winner. The notifications went online for everyone the next day (Monday). Last year, they planned to repeat this but the weather ruined those plans (huge snow storm). I would think they would like to do that again, if the weather holds. If that is the case, the decisions would not be released online on Friday. Hang in there, there’s less than two weeks left until you find out…best of luck to everyone.

I’m inclined to agree with @maryversity. I favor the 30th also, for the same reasons.

Good Luck All!!

If 3,000 more people applied than normal for priority, what will it mean for the decisions?

Same question, does that mean that the acceptance rate is going to be lower? Also, does anyone know when the housing glitch is going to come into effect?

@SoofDad - my prediction is based on your own astute observations that proved accurate last year…

@mdamd2017 - if you are asking if they will admit more students because they have more applicants, the answer is highly unlikely. They have a finite number of spots (which is more like an approximate range rather than a specific number) and the bean counters have done their work to estimate yield - meaning if they want x number of students in the incoming class, they have to admit y number of students because it is likely that z number (a percentage of y) of those admitted will chose to not attend Maryland. Maryland does not have a waitlist like other schools. This means that if one student declines admission to Maryland, it does not open a spot for another student.

Oh and fwiw, I know some schools play the game of releasing admissions late afternoon on a Friday, right when admissions closes, cutting off the opportunity for people to call. They believe that having to wait a weekend to talk to someone will give people a chance to cool their emotions so it reduces the flood of phone calls of “why”…Maryland does NOT play those games.

For the record, my previous post was not implying that Maryland “reverses” admissions decisions if parents call (that is NOT the case at all!!!) - just that they do not purposefully release a decision on Friday afternoon.

@Meichangsu - typically the day before decisions are released.

@maryversity How come on my application portal it says Recommendations: Not Received and then under it, all my teacher recs say that they’re submitted back in october. Is this some glitch or something?

@YoohooAddict check the offline recommendations…the recs may show as received there

@maryversity How do I do that?
