@Unitedfam4 - Sorry, I misread your post. The Admitted Student dates are for all.
Here is a link for new students. The orientation dates have not been set as yet.

The checklist is still showing that everything is complete with all dates in October
For all you Freshman Connection admits with that March 1 first-come, first-served registration looming…
S19 just signed up for Discover Maryland Day on February 18. We can’t really afford to wait until Admitted Students Day on March 1 to make this decision.
Here’s the link if anyone else is interested…

I have a question about transferring from letters & sciences to smith. It is my understanding that you cannot apply until you are 45 credits in. Also, you have only one shot at it. It looks like they are implementing stricter guidelines for acceptance beginning Fall 2019…auto admit if your cumulative gpa is 3.8 but between 3.0-3.79 you have to undergo a competitive review. So, if you are denied that transfer…then what? You have to change your mind on your future or transfer to a different school?
I do plan to address my above question directly to UMD. I am trying to figure who best to ask and thought I would give time for the post decision day dust to settle. It sounds like they are probably quite busy now. Any input from the resident experts here would be greatly appreciated.
@md2384 - Here is a link. I don’t have any specific knowledge about Smith
Hi! I had same problem. No decision. Everything 100% complete back in late September. Ultimately I noticed that under TERM umd said 2018. The other coalition schools all said 2019. Not even sure how that could have happened. I reached out to admissions. They told me it was 100% a coalition glitch and he would have an answer in next 7-10 business days under priority review. Apparently I’m not the only one. Unfortunate but I guess it happens.
@SoofDad thanks, I had reviewed all that material and it doesn’t really say what happens if you don’t get in…other than try an appeal.
@md2384 - The very last bullet says
Any student denied admission or dismissed from the major may appeal to the Associate Dean of
the College
@Unitedfam4 My D is a freshman in Scholars program. The admitted student day is for all. Once you are committed to UMD, there will be several orientations in summer. There will be some Scholars specific orientation dates for you to choose from to attend. It is usually a 2-day orientation for students (they will live in a dorm overnight).
@md2384, I noticed your comment about Smith/business that It looks like they are implementing stricter guidelines for acceptance beginning Fall 2019…auto admit if your cumulative gpa is 3.8 but between 3.0-3.79 you have to undergo a competitive review."
Actually, that is NOT stricter, it is actually really, really exciting news!
In the past, no one had any clue what would get you admitted or not, how “well” you had to do to be considered, etc. Everyone had to “undergo a competitive review.” There was absolutely NO “auto admit”!!!
This is awesome to know that if you can maintain a 3.8 cum gpa, you’re in. That’s a pretty clear guideline and a relief for students that are driven to do well. No questions hanging in the air. Really, truly, it is a GOOD thing! It’s actually HUGE news!
So, to answer what happens if you don’t get in? I know some students pursue economics which is a business related field but not a LEP (in the BSOS department).
@STEM2017 thank you so much for the link to Discover Maryland day on Feb 18. We just enrolled. We feel the same. We can’t wait until March to make a decision. The only thing is that we’d like to speak to prior FC students and learn more about that while we’re there (hoping we can), but this is better than waiting to at least see the campus and learn other things. Plus it’s a holiday so don’t have to miss school or work.
@njtwinmom You’re very welcome. It’s a day off for us too. He won’t need to use any of his ‘college visit’ days. I may reach out to the FC admins to set up some time for S to speak with them. Maybe they can connect us with an FC student. I’m very happy with the way this program looks. I think it will be perfect for my son. We’ll learn more on Feb 18.
FYI, here’s their contact info…301-405-7762 or email fc@umd.edu.
@STEM2017 yup I have that info. We plan to schedule a meeting to talk about requirements to applying to Smith after FC. I’ll also inquire about setting up time on 2/18 to speak to someone. That’s a good idea. This whole college process has thrown us for a loop. In at UMD (her ‘stretch’ school) according to counselor but on wait list at Udel (her ‘safety’ school). Meanwhile accepted to a lot of other college’s business schools with a ton of merit. Lots to decision! Good thing her twin is pretty settled. ?
Best of luck @njtwinmom !
@maryversity thanks. I agree, guidelines are better than the unknown. D has a lot to think about. My concern is that her stats weren’t high enough for fall admit or for her major. (1240, 3.8 uw/4.4 w, honors classes but only a couple ap). Starting college has enough small unknowns and adding your whole future to the unknowns is a lot of pressure. It would be such setback to invest 3 semesters into a school and then not be able to keep going with your plan.
p.s. she is interested in accounting so econ wouldn’t quite be right for her.
For those who are waiting for Music decisions, last year’s thread said they came out on 2/2. Hopefully same time this year.
Admitted as a comm major!
GPA: 3.75 (out of 4.0)
ACT: 30
SAT: 1340
Very involved in high school (class officer, DECA chapter President and international competition in Marketing Communications, NHS, National Business Honor Society, co editor of yearbook, field hockey, competitive dance, etc)
Decent essay and recommendations. Currently reaching out to admissions because I decided I want to change to a marketing major, so they are reviewing my application again now for the switch. Go Terps!
Update: UMD replied that they did not receive a transcript from a summer abroad program that my D attended in 2017 (transcript was sent by USPS in September, in advance of her Coalition application). This program was not affiliated at all with her high school and credits were not applied. Once again, the transcript section in her Checklist shows “complete” and she received no communication from admissions about this transcript at any time. She does not want to lose her priority status over this. UMD has been very responsive. Hoping to work this out.
