How competitive is it to get into Smith Undergraduate Business School as a prospective high-school applicant?

I called Admissions and asked about the asterisk. My son was accepted into Aerospace Engineering* and the counselor wasn’t sure. He put me on hold and asked around, then came back on the line and said he still wasn’t sure…but it might have referenced the fact that my son was a direct admit to a Limited Enrollment Program which is rare. Sounded good to me, since the * didn’t refer me to anything else in the letter.

Some one had clarified about the asterisk before on this forum, It stands for LEP.

On my acceptance letter, it only says I was accepted into BioFIRE and my major is “Letters and Science”. Does that mean I wasn’t given direct entry as a Biology major like I applied to be?

^^^Nevermind I did some digging, I wasn’t admitted into the LEP but I’ve been provided with an advisor to assist in transferring into the LEP within the first year

Yes, you are in Letters and Sciences. According to http://www.ltsc.umd.edu/majorguides/BSCI.pdf you can transfer after you complete the Gateway classes, MATH 130 or 140, BSCI 170/171 and BSCI 160/161, CHEM 131/132 and CHEM 231/232 with the required grades. My daughter was placed in Letters and Sciences and had no problem transferring to Biology after she completed her Gateway classes.

@reads2222 Would AP/college credits count towards that? I’m just surprised I wasn’t admitted given I have college credit for calc, chem, and bio… Maybe they favor IS rather than OOS for LEPs lol

@noah2425 - Maryland’s Board of Regents has a policy requiring UMD to have a student body that is 70% in-state residents. This could have LEP implications, but you should have no problem doing an Internal Transfer

@noah2425 You can always appeal their decision if you have the required classes through AP credits. Call them up and they will tell you how to proceed. A friend’s son (IS) was placed in Letters and Sciences instead of Engineering. They called up admissions and were asked to write an email justifying why he should be placed in Engineering. He listed his classes and his AP scores and received an email a few days later that he was now admitted to Engineering.

For scholars it says to write about why you like each program in 3-5 sentences, does that you should write 3-5 for each program or just 3-5 total

Has anyone received a physical acceptance letter from UMD Smith School of Business. My daughter’s friend received her letter, but she is not in Smith. We are still waiting…

@jdecker9 My son completed his scholars preference today and said there was only room for a few sentences in total. He ended up just writing about his top pick. He was really only interested in two programs.

@JLeonard813 Didn’t receive a physical letter, but did receive a congratulatory email on the acceptance from the Business School.

has anyone sent in their honors preferencing form but still see it saying not received on the coalition portal? im going to call admissions tomorrow but i was just wondering if anyone was experiencing the same thing

@Ezga3969 I think you are supposed to get an email when you submit the form…

Has anyone gotten their physical letter from admissions itself? Do we even get a letter from admissions with more info inside?

My son got a regular sized envelope yesterday with a letter of congrats
No other info

We got a letter yesterday too. It was basically the same letter as on coalition. No other info. Regular size envelope. We are a spring admit. Not sure if that makes a difference.

Question regarding scholars program. I see you can choose between about 10 different tracks which looks like during freshman year you are required to take 2 classes in that track (in addition to your regular classes) per semester. My question is, this seems like its optional but is there any benefit in being a part of this program other than living in the particular housing for each track (which to me does not seem like a huge benefit)?
