so finaid loans have come out. are state and federal grants yet to be released?
I am out of state and I got an email in my Spam that my award is ready. I haven’t committed yet.
Where did you guys look to get info for financial aid? (Sorry I’m confused on the process).
@kT2019 An email comes that says your award is ready. There is a link to the UMD portal, but you need to sign up first in order to get in. It says that IT needs a day or two to authenticate your account before you actually get permission to view it. If you already did that when you were admitted, you will be able to see it right away. My S did not, so we have to wait.
Son’s FA email went to his junk. And after looking at his award, that’s where it should stay.
Kidding aside, we got exactly what we were expecting…a $5,000 loan.
Hmm, son hasn’t received an email and I have no idea where to even find the UMD portal since they directed him to Coalition for everything else.
We are expecting financial aid of the loan variety so I guess there’s no rush to look at it.
Are they kidding? Son and daughter both accepted. Daughter to LLP Carrilon. Son to Honors College and FIRE. Both got scholarships ($2K and $12K), but NO real financial aid. (just loans) They expect me to pay $50K for my daughter and $40K for my son. (We are OOS)
You can try & get on the portal without waiting the time. My son was able to access info within a short time. Was surprised. Sadly they gave hime nothing but the $5500. loan.
Sadley same situations but not twins. Son accepted into honors college & we ae OOS. Only $5000 merit scholarship. I also have another one in college elsewhere. Crazy.
Honors. OOS. $5500 loan.
I never got an email with portal information and never got an email saying my financial aid was ready… anyone else?
We were able to get into my son’s portal, but the package isn’t ready yet (which is probably why he didn’t get an email!) His merit scholarship is listed there, the loan package doesn’t appear.
Has anyone been awarded college or departmental scholarships?
Daughter was offered $5,500 in loans, not a penny of aid, in state, 4.5 avg, 32 ACT, already has 12 college
credits with 4.0 avg (including A+ in mock trial class at College Park last summer). University of Michigan offered her $26,511 a year for total of $106,044. I can not comprehend how UMD offers her ZERO, and Michigan comes up with more than 100 G. Go Blue.
@madmdtaxpayer The difference is that Michigan has a $12 billion endowment and Maryland’s is $640 million.
@madmdtaxpayer My impression is that state schools often offer strong OOS students merit to help offset the OOS tuition. IS students don’t have that additional mark-up, so tuition is less to begin with. Seems like Maryland would still come out cheaper than Michigan. Doesn’t it?
Yes, even with the $ Michigan offered it will be more than UMD. But some of Michigan’s programs are worth it - like the Ross Business School. As a life long MD tax payer, and an alumni, I can not express how angry I am about this.
Thanks @collegemom9, I was not aware of the huge difference in endowments, that does explain a lot.
My daughter is OSS and she received ZERO money. Yep…full tuition…ouch!
I will add that Michigan also has a very generous in state financial aid program- the ‘Go Blue Guarantee’. Families with income of up to $180k receive aid. However this is made possible due to the previously mentioned endowment. Very few Maryland students receive financial aid from UMD except for the loans.
On 2/28, my son received an email stating the financial aid decision was ready…for an UNsubsidized loan, the worst loan possible since interest starts accruing immediately…no thank you.
