My son received his honors LLP decision today.
I have twins who are admitted to UMD for class of 2023. They each will come in with about 35 AP credits. (All 5s except for 2 4s.) Would it be better for them to go in as sophomores, or to repeat the classes (and hopefully get A’s ?)
@noah2425 so sorry you didn’t get more merit aid and had to decline. I believe you said you were from California? That’s a LONG way to go for University of Maryland! My D got accepted and got the same 8K merit scholarship (spread over 4 years and we’re also west coast) I don 't think she will choose to go there over her other acceptances so far, although she is still waiting on several more schools so we’ll see what happens. I am sure your strong stats got you into some other good schools. You will do great wherever you land!
@UMDtwins They do not have to repeat classes that they have AP credit for. However, there may be other freshmen classes depending on their majors and they can start taking some advanced classes in addition to Gened classes. Many of the students come with a number of AP credits, my son will have 31. They all start as “freshmen” but can graduate earlier if they finish in less than 4 years.
@shellbab My D did as well. University Honors.
I got an email today saying I got into University Honors, but no update for that nor merit scholarships in my Checklist. Did everyone’s checklist update?
ACES!!!
My daughter was accepted at UMD Smith, OSU Fisher Scholars program and Purdue Krannert honors program. She has received 10K/year from Purdue and 14.5K/year from OSU. Nothing from UMD, not even invited to Scholars. Is it worthwhile placing a phone call to admissions? Is it just that UMD is that much better? She loves the DC location, but is it worth almost 100K over 4 years?
Ya the merit awards definitely seem to be difficult to predict. My friend who is now a freshman at Maryland got the 50k over four years. He didn’t get Scholars or Honors.
i got the dean’s scholarship and into the gemstone program, but my dad also works here so i get free tuition so that may be a factor but im not sure
My D is doing her Banneker Key interview tomorrow!! Anyone else?
Best of luck to your D @“SpecialK” - my D and I will be there on Monday.
$50k distributed over four years for me as well! Definitely very happy with this choice especially since I got ACES.
Yeah I’m the girl from the thread about being salty she didn’t get B/K. I’m no longer salty or sad. So refer to that thread for more detailed stats and ECs.
Admitted for the Honors College
Major: Applied Math
SAT: 1540
ACT: 36
Class Rank: 1/617
SAT II: 800 (Math 2), 800 (Chem)
12 APs, the rest are honors.
GPA: 4.0 uw, 4.53 w (AP - 5, Honors - 4.25, Academic - 4)
State: PA
Question: If I graduate early, do I essentially not use $12.5k of the scholarship?
@momof2atl Thank you! Best of luck to your D as well!
@sliu412 - I’m pretty sure that you’ll lose that 4th year of your scholarship money if you graduate in 3 years, but you can call UMD to check on that. UMD doesn’t really have that much scholarship money to make gift of $12.5K, but it would be nice. You might want to consider stretching things out and taking some Graduate level courses in your 4th year. That is also something you can check on, if you attend UMD.
Congrats to all who were awarded scholarships and good luck to those with BK interviews.
I was accepted in state to UMD for Journalism and the scholars program, but I haven’t received any emails about scholarships, nor have I gotten my physical acceptance letter yet. Is anyone in the same boat? Does this mean I wasn’t awarded any scholarships?
Yeah, I haven’t received anything about merit scholarships either, which is pretty disappointing as I thought I had a pretty competitive application.
my friend got her finaid information today and was informed via email (time stamp shows it was sent at 6:21). does anyone know if these are only sent to committed students? do you get need based aid if you also are getting merit scholarships?
@Ezga3969 My S got an email at 6:20pm. He isn’t committed. Since he hadn’t signed up for a University ID yet, he can’t get on to the portal until their IT Dept gives him access. They are saying it can take up to 48 hours to confirm his account, so we can’t see the FA award until then. Kind of annoying.
