My daughter has decided on Michigan. UMD offered $5,500 in loans, no aid, in state, 4.5 avg, 32 ACT, rank 8 out of 375, already has 12 college credits with 4.0 avg (including A+ in mock trial class at College Park last summer). University of Michigan offered her $26,511 a year for total of $106,044.
@madmdtaxpayer
Just wondering why you posted ur Ds stats? What does that have to do w anything? Ppl are talking about the math placement test at UMD
My most sincere apologies, I did not know this was the “UMD math placement test” thread. I thought it was the “University of Maryland - College Park EA Class of 2023” thread. Oh, …wait.
This thread has covered a lot of diverse topics since it was started back in December. No harm done.
Can anyone speak to the recent in-state admit statistics for Freshman Connection? I know regular admission will not be an option for my son, who had a terrible sophomore year. We will have the guidance counselor write about sophomore year 2.6 GPA, which combined with freshman 3.4 took him to a 3.1. His junior year GPA is hovering around a 3.8 - 3.9 and senior year he will take his first APs - he was barred from taking them previously because of his GPA. I’m guessing he’ll have a 3.4 by end of junior year with SATs @ 1350 (he got a 1290 first try). Thanks!
@1stTimeThruMom - There are no official stats on Freshman Connection/Spring Admits that I can find. There were a handful of applicants with Spring Admission who posted their Stats earlier in this thread, but that is a very small sample. It seems like UMD offers Spring Admission to about 3,000 to 4,000 students. Last year about 1,300 of them enrolled in Freshman Connection.
I believe that there is an advantage to applying by the Priority Deadline (Nov 1). Another consideration is that UMD is required to have a student population that is about 70% in-state.
@madmdtaxpayer - My daughter is a Freshman at UMICH. She received the full banneker key scholarship at UMD last year (we are in state), but turned it down. She did receive the Shipman Scholarship for $30K a year at UMICH, but I probably would have paid full tuition for her to attend. UMICH is an amazing school!
@1stTimeThruMom Our HS accepts a lot of kids to UMD, and several that attend are FC students. I have heard that this year has been more competitive than last year (and that seems to be the trend all around). Based on data from the past 3 years, the average for our school is around 4.3/3.64 (and climbing) and the average SAT is 1380. I suspect the FC acceptances are for students below the average (3.4 and upper 1200s). That’s just from our school, of course, but it gives you some perspective.
@firstwavemom Thanks. I am still wrapping my head around the fact that our local flagship is so hard to get into! It sure wasn’t that way back in the pre-historic days when I applied to college!
@1stTimeThruMom I will add that applying PRI is a definite advantage. I know of a couple of kids with very high stats that applied ED to highly selective schools (did not get in) and did not apply PRI to UMD. They applied RD and were offered FC. Best of luck to your son!
I went to admitted day on 4/5. I was impressed on their CS program and opportunities there. More than that the way they made available students and others on questions, finance etc is impressive. The bad part is dorms, it’s so run down. It’s not worthwhile to go there for engineering as OOS. I also went to VT from there. It should be good college but I didn’t get much information and didn’t get good feeling but it’s big campus and clean . It’s not for me though. I’d rather go to Rutgers for engineering. If it’s CS, I am torn. It’s decision time for me
Does anyone have experience with FIRE?
@cshigh, only the freshmen dorms are not so great, but they are at least a decent size. Upper class dorm options are much better. As for Comp Sci…the new Iribe Center is opening in time for Fall 2019…
@maryversity tough thing is to pay $15k higher as oos for CS. The new center is exciting
Rutgers is my state school, but it was not a good “fit” for either of my kids. If Rutgers is a good fit for you, it should be a no brainer…while I am a huge cheerleader/fan for Maryland, you will get a great education at both schools.
@maryversity Would you mind share insight how your children felt or determined “not” a god fit? I am going to Rutgers open session this Saturday.
We attended the admitted students day on 4/5. Couldn’t have been more pleased with the info session (Merrill School of Journalism), campus tour, tour guides, meals, etc. Daughter waited a day or two afterwards, and then excitedly said, “Dad, I want to go to Maryland.” GO TERPS!
@FriarDad - Welcome to TERP Nation!
@cshigh “fit” is really a personal perception that takes into account a lot of variables of how it makes you feel when you walk around campus. Things that may influence that feeling could be student body (is there a particular vibe you like or not? is there a lot of diversity, etc), academics, types of programs offered, campus style/ location (urban, suburban), etc. It’s different for everyone.
My daughter didn’t choose Maryland for the same reason she didn’t choose Rutgers- neither school offered the type of specific design program another school did. Honestly, please do not other peoples’ choices influence your own impressions of “fit” at Rutgers for you.
Both my kids have friends that attended Rutgers and really loved it! They all got a great education and have great jobs. It truly doesn’t matter where you go to school as much as what you do when you get there. I promise.
Thank you!
